Navigation / DVD questions W211 e320

I'm going to the dealer to get a couple cheap parts. They have the 2015 navigation disc for 200.00 . My 2006 e320 didn't come with one. I'm wondering if its worth it ? Does this work as good as a tom tom gps ? I'm thinking by this time they should have pretty good maps and it should work nicely. Anyone tried it? Anyone interested in this? I'm thinking i might sell it cheaper if it doesn't get me around good.

Also, what can you make that dvd player play movies? tHat would be pretty cool .

Why not use Google Maps on your phone for navigation? With Bluetooth to your radio, you get voice turn by turn on the car audio system. Just mount your phone so you can look at the maps handsfree. Is the Mercedes navigation better than Google Maps? $200 for a DVD is not very appealing. Do you get free lifetime updates for that price?

Didn't come with a DVD or NAVI?
The NAVI DVD won't work if you put it in the head unit. The NAVI drive unit is in the trunk on the left.

Not worth it. The nav system dates from the 2003 launch of the w211 chassis. A decade down the road it feels really, really old and clunky. It doesn't do exact street addresses, only the block in which the address is located. You can't type in or speak the destination, you have to use the cursor buttons to move through the on-screen keyboard to provide input. It was fine for the time, but a $100 Garmin from Wal-Mart is generations ahead of it now, not to mention smartphone apps.

Not necessarily. My wife's 2008 ML320 CDI's unit has two slots behind the faceplate. You push the EJECT button below the LCD, and the faceplate swings up. There is a CD slot and a NAV-DVD slot. Your unit may not be like this but I wanted to throw that out there for others who may be reading this post.

I have seen examples of the trunk mounted drive in eBay pictures of mid-2000s models with NAV, so your statement is true, just not all the time.

I agree, the factory NAV unit is light years behind what you can do using your iPhone/Android or a dedicated Garmin/TomTom GPS. The user interface is antiquated and sheer frustration to use. To be fair, the system was probably designed in the early 2000s so it is at least 10 years old.

Its only saving grace is that it puts the next turn information in the instrument cluster (if you page through to it on the menu) so it is easy to see. Plus the fact that it is always there and you don't have to worry with sticking something to the windshield.

I was lucky enough to get an 2013 E350 for a rental car a while back (I rent a LOT of cars because I travel almost every week for work). The factory NAV uses the rotary dial in the center console, only marginally better than the tempermental joystick. The menu structure is essentially the same. Instead of having to push the joystick this way and that way, you spin the knob back and forth through the list. It also wobbles back and forth to pick your letters from the "bingo board".

I have tried using Google Maps/Wayze on my phone and it works pretty good. Except for one problem. My iPhone is owned/provided by my work and so it has access to my corporate e-mail and network. They have a group policy enforced that locks the phone down after 1 minute no matter what after the last time it is touched. At that point it stops providing updates and the screen goes blank. And we have to use a "strong" password, requiring both letters and numbers. So there is no way to unlock the phone while driving, not to mention our company's "no phone while driving, or you'll be terminated" policy. Therefore I carry a Garmin everywhere I go while traveling for work.

My nav dvd is in the trunk. I thought surely with updateable software they would have a decent nav system by now. I'm also mainly curious how the factory system works. I see you can get a whole head unit that has nav , bluetooth , plays mp3's, dvds for around 500.00 to 600.00 bucks. But i was hoping a blue tooth puck and updated nav disc would work and be a bit cheaper. I hate to just throw away a good system if it works ok. I'm gonna try it and take back the disc if it sucks. "This piece of crap can't even find my house which was built in 1988 " seems like a viable excuse.

Probably once you break the seal on the nav disk packaging it is not returnable.

Your ML is equipped with the MCS 2 system, and yes, the NAVI drive is in the head unit. The 2006 E-Class in question has the COMAND system, with the NAVI drive in the trunk.

FWIW, the '03 211's were fitted with Audio 50 and adding NAVI wasn't possible. Early '04's got the COMAND system which had a NAVI button on the HU but still couldn't be fitted with NAVI. That pissed off a lot of people who learned this after the fact.

Lastly, once you open the NAVI disc you own it.

Got the nav working. I like it. The latest maps are fine and it displays road and direction and next turn on the speedometer. I like the integration and if it fails my phone maps will do it. it took me to an exact house number in the city and it seems to give ok directions. If it didn't have this gps I would never add it,but since its there, it's worth using. Anyone interested in disc pm me.

Now to find out how to make the nav play DVDs. I turned on the tv , DVD options in the command system with my autel scanner tool but could not find a button to make the DVD play. There are loptions to allow while moving and I turned them all on. Nav button just said no DVD installed. anyone know if it is possible with this version?
