1987 300tdt Valve Cover "Grommet"?

Attached is a picture of my valve cover. The bottom hole is covered by the oil cap. The top hole goes to the breather hose. Alas, I believe there is supposed to be some type of "grommet" in that top hole.

Does anyone have a part number for that "grommet"?

TIA

Yep there should be a grommet:

The new parts will fit but will not get a good seal. I don't think you can make it as good as factory. You can't access the back side.

Thanks for the heads-up Ah-Kay. Any recommendations on a fix? Is there a sealant that can be applied to the groove in the "grommet" to give it a better seal?

I presently have a rubber one on there purchased from O'Reiley. It leaks oil across the top and into the oil cap area...

No. I am still looking for a good solution, may be an used valve cover, at least with the elbow part intact. Don't care much about the plastic tube. That can be fixed.

I don't remember mine being terribly leaky after I replaced it but then again I could be wrong. Maybe its a difference between the 602 and 603 covers?

Wasn't a problem on my 190DT (same fitting). What you can do is smear the groove with RTV.

I have a good elbow from pic-a-part. Alas, it is much smaller than the hole in the picture, thus the need for the seal ring. The elbow is ribbed. Will the seal ring push out once the elbow is pushed in?

MXFrank, what is RTV?

What I am saying is that you cannot make it like factory even with new part. You cannot access the back side. So the new parts are useless so to speak. Would it leak terribly, the answer is no. Would it leak with rtv, likely over time. Would it look good, no. This is my experience fwiw.

Maybe there are bad copies out there, the dealer part certainly works. There's absolutely no need to access the back side. It's easy to work into place from the top, RTV is insurance, not really necessary. Yes, the elbow pushes into the grommet and will not force it into the valve cover.

RTV is a silicone based gasket sealant. Go to any parts store and ask for RTV, they'll have a few product to choose from. Use a very thin coat on a questionable seal, and it fills the gaps.

Thanks for the head-up Pwogaman. Once I saw the price difference of a whopping $1, I was going to go with the genuine MB part. :-)

That URO thread made me cringe!!!
