1987 190d Transmission Fluid Specs
 

Did a search but couldn't find anything......How much fluid for a fluid and filter change? Should the torque converter be drained and filled as well? Thanks!

Absolutely do it right and drain the torque converter too. Typically it will take around 7.5 to 8 liters. You can always measure what comes out. Add about half, start it up to fill the converter and then shut it off and fill the rest of the way.

Drain the torque converter. It's amazing on these cars and most MBs that we have this drain plug and can do this at all. Inferior designs require the connection of a machine to do a fluid exchange. Take advantage of it. Like sokoloff said, fill about half then start for a few seconds. I didn't do this the first time and ended up making a mess on my shop floor as it came out some overflow hole.

It's quite easy to drain the converter if you have the socket for the crank bolt.

My handy-dandy '87 Chiltons lists 11.6 pints for trans fluid capacity.

Drain plug uses a 5mm Allen wrench.

Wow, thanks for the detailed help, it really clears things up. Hopefully I can manage this, and if not there is a local shop I trust who will do it for about $150.

BTW, here's a tip - if you can get you hands on an oil suction unit, suck out as much trans fluid out of the trans (via the fill tube) as you can before dropping the pan - way less tranny fluid to spill & less mess when you drop the pan!

Some 190's don't have the drain plug. Don't be disappointed if you find that you have one of these Inferior Designs.
