oil seperator maintenance, om617

Does the oil seperator in the air filter housing ever need any maintenance? Mine seems to spit as much oil down into the intake as it does down the drain tube. I also get a puddle in my housing which soaks one side of my air filter. I'm going to replace the rubber hose that attaches to the oil seperator (where it protrudes from the lid) incase some oil is leaking past that point as well.

This is the californai model with EGR, the air pump doesn't vent into the housing either, so no oil coming from anywhere other than the breather tube.

I just get a lot of oil down the intake as well it leaks out the drain hole in the filter housing which leaks all down the side of the engine bay and to the ground. I'd like to get it under control without having to clean out my air filter housing every few days.

Blowby is normal, had a 20+ year experience Mercedes mechanic check it.

Pic? The separator on the majority of turbo 617 motors can benefit from disassembly and cleaning, and rtV sealing back together...

There was a thread a couple years back where some one posted pictures of taking one apart, and sealing it up with RTV.

I can't say with surety that it's helped that much, but here is my diy:

on the other hand, routing the PCV gas and oil back into the intake is OK too. after disappointing experiments with a catch can, i just send it all into the intake.

Thanks! Yeah I looked up the other posts too. Seems like this should help a lot.

I'll probably just seal it up and and see how it does. At least it should direct the vapour and oil down into the turbo. One other thing I thought of as well is the o-ring on the bottom of the air cleaner housing, if it's not sealing then it will be sucking air through the seperator which might give the vapours less chance to condense in the seperator. Although that's just a theory, my car has enough blowby that I doubt it ever has much of a chance to condense at all. I don't see how this seperator can could ever keep up with it.

The car would probably run better and cleaner if I used an external seperator and then dumped that filtered air back into the existing seperator. But then I'd have to drain that external seperator once and a while.

I just read this post that mentions oil coming up the line.

Oil Geyser (in my engine compartment)

I guess if that check valve is bad then oil could be forced up into the oil seperator and intake as well. Maybe this happens occasionally when I'm driving? Although I imagine I'd be using a lot more oil and blowing a lot more smoke. And it would probably leak around that o-ring under the oil seperator.
