Take off hesitation

I've had my car, an 84 300SD, for a year and a half now and have not had any engine trouble. I put a quart of ATF in the tank about every 3rd fillup to clean out my fuel injectors. But lately I've been getting some hestitaion on take offs. It's very inconsistent. Sometimes it happens 1 out of 10 times, sometimes 1 of 5. Sometimes, I have no problem at all. I'm really hoping it is not a fuel pump problem. What it feels like is that it's not making a compression and it has to get enough fuel in there to make the compression. It could be possible that I've gotten some water in my engine somehow, or it could be a fuel injection problem. But the last thing I want is to pull out in a busy street and not be able to take off. Once again, it is not consistent, but when it does happen, it takes several seconds to build up any rpms. I have a friend with a 74 Camaro with a 350 that had this problem and it ended up being a bad carb., so I'm really hoping it's not my fuel pump.

The last time I replace one of my fuel filters it was last Fall. What could be a possibilty is I put some kersoene in my tank out of a can that might have gotten some water in it over time - in which case that would mean I would need t change my fuel filters. So I'll start there and hope that it ends there. The last thing I want to mess with is the fuel pump.

Put some drygas (alcohol) in the tank if you think there might be some water in it. I add a little drygas once in a while because there is always some condensation here in cold weather. Some Diesel fuel additives also have a water absorber that will purge water from the fuel system.

Is there a loss of power on hills? If not, the fuel filters are OK. If you are getting air in someplace, unless it is a large air leak, the air will be purged by the air bleed hole in the secondary filter. The air goes back to the fuel tank along with the overflow fuel from the injectors and injection pump.

Don't put ATF in the tank! Use diesel fuel treatment, available at auto parts stores and truck stops. Any brand will work. Save the tranny juice for the tranny. It has additives that leave crud in the combustion chamber.

Most likely, you have either dirty filters or cruddy injectors. Also, when was the last time you changed the air filter? Turbos eat LOTS of air, and hence lots of dirt ends up on the filter. When it gets plugged, you get poor performance.

If those all check out, look for fuel line leaks (the fuel will siphon back into the tank with the car level -- park on a steep slope with the nose down for a while to check). A bad priming pump will cause problems, too (see above).

Finally, a plugged boost control line or a bad swtichover valve on the overboost system will cause you to have no turbo effect -- very slow acceleration! Check for a bad or shorted overboost switch, or for a leaking swithover valve.

Well, I replaced both fuel filters and the problem appears to fixed. I did notice a leak from the hand pump, so I'm thinking that was it. Since I replaced my filters, it's been all good.

Now, the reason I use ATF is from a recommendation from a Bosch dealer who told me that Bosch themselves put ATF in their tanks every 3rd fillup. I do the same and it has increased the performance of my injectors. From what I have heard so far, it causes no damage to the engine as all the detergines end up getting burned up. I've used Diesel purge before, but actually found ATF did a better job.
