Snow Shovels and Nice MB Exteriors: A Bad Combination

Of all the things I worried about in relation to the Blizzard of 2015....losing power, shoveling snow, why our stupid Golden Retriever REFUSES to poop in the snow....one thing I did NOT anticipate was my son's dopey roommate trying to be helpful by cleaning the snow off my nice, black E300 with a METAL-TIPPED SNOW SHOVEL.:eek::eek: Actually broke the hood ornament off...but the worst part is a BADLY scratched hood and a good six or seven surfaces being scratched.

I chalk it up to the delayed development of the teenage male brain.

Let's hope that is the case instead of some mind altering drug...

I would have beaten him with the shovel

compu_85 01-29-2015 04:42 PM

I even hate brushing snow off the bodywork with a soft brush, in case there's any grit between the snow and the paint :(

Yeah don't use a brush unless you know it won't scratch. The sharp nylon edges will leave fine scratches all over as well. My DAD did that to my other new car once. Sheeesh

That's hard to believe anyone over 10 years old would do that to a car. Especially Up North where that weather is the norm. Will your insurance cover the damage? Was it done on your property? I'd have to at least ask for damages $ from the teen.

That's what I was thinking too.

I once saw a middle-aged man take a pocket knife to his Fleetwood Cadillac to "chip" the ice AND paint off of it - but that was in the Deep South where they weren't expected to know how to deal with ice on cars.

If he didn't drag the shovel hard over the paint, you should look into having it buffed out.

Two things, however, you need a real pro to get nasty scratches off, and you need that x2 on a black car.

Why are you mad at the Golden? He just doesn't want to mess up your nice new white snow :D.

Call your insurance agent, see what the options are. Let the kid work off paying the deductible. We all need new paint, right? :D

shertex 01-29-2015 06:55 PM

Yeah, I'm definitely going through insurance....it will be $$$$, lots of surfaces. Hopefully the kid will pay our $500 deductible. We'll see.

The thin ice frosting on the windshields that we experience in winter down south are dealt with the most comical ways, I have seen a guy use said pocket knife, hot boiling water (cracccccck --- aaah - nice broken windshield), steel spatula, shovel etc etc....

a little living in arctic climate quickly teaches you how to be prepared for this.

Talk to a body man about price before you talk to the insurance company. A claim not filed counts as a claim in many states. Talk to your insurance agent about a "hypothetical" situation. A knowledgable agent will understand and get you the necessary information without having anything hit your record.

I can feel your pain and frusteration. Grown men also do not so bright things like the snow plough who barried a car in 16 feet of snow because he was too lazy to call a tow truck. Or an office mate who stood on the hood of his new Lexus to put a box in the attic of his garage only to see indentations on his hood.
