Turn Signals Work Fine. Hazard Does not Blink.

Hi all,

I have tried doing extensive searching on the forum but wasn't able to find anything that helps. I know there are a lot of turn signal posts on the forum.

I have a 1982 240d that has the small rocker switch for the hazards with the separate relay that sits under the ashtray. Both the switch and the relay are new. The turn signals work exactly like they should but when i turn on the hazard, all 4 turn turn signals light up but don't blink at all. All the fuses look good.

This is my first W123 in about 5 years. Someone had put a lot of time in fixing this car up but over tightened one of the valves when they did a rebuild. I just got it back on the road and am really thankful to find so many other enthusiast and resources. Any trouble shooting ideas are appreciated!

Thanks,

Arnie

Sounds like something is awry with the flasher. However, the flasher usually works with current. It might be something as simple as the wrong wattage of bulb installed, causing the flasher to draw current that it isn't designed for. (example, sometimes a heavier flasher needs to be installed on some cars to get the proper rate of flash when pulling a trailer)

Thank you for the replies. This really has me stumped. I would expect if I had a 6 volt bulb in one of my turn signals that it would also keep the light from flashing when I used the turn signal switch. Using the turn signal indicator switch, the turn signals work perfect. It only stops blinking when I put on the hazards.

I went to switch out the relay with another one and the turn signal lights stayed on without the relay even in the socket. It appears turning the hazard lights on is bypassing the relay! I have studied the wiring diagram in my chilton manual but it doesn't look totally correct for a 1982 240d. Is there a better diagram somewhere to look at that will give and idea of what is happening? I tried clicking the link on the last post as recommended above but the link is dead. I would hate to pull out the stereo and start digging around without knowing what I am looking for.

This car's wiring looks stock so I am surprised to be having these issues. I really appreciates everyone's time and input.

On my 83 240D, the flasher relay which is at the front under the shifter console panel must be grounded. As memory serves its a black wire.

When you said "both the switch and the relay are new" - which switch are you pertaining to - the red emergency hazard switch or the turn signal switch?

When I was diagnosing an electrical noise on my car when the turn signal is used on the left side I played with the hazard while the turn signals are running. I recall the hazards/flashers overruled the turn signals. This is with new turn signal switch and hazard relay (both from MB). The emergency hazard switch is also new.

Sounds like the previous owner had the hazard switch/relay replaced to try to fix the problem, but it didn't? Wiring problem? Fuse problem?

Perhaps the "new" switch/relay were faulty out of the box?
