Theses cars were built to go 55 in 84. That's what year my 300sd is. In 85 the speed limit went to 65. That's why the diff was change to 2.88.

I guess it depends on your 4th gear ratio as well. We probably have different trans.

I still drive 55. My steering gear isn't what it used to be.

Diffs in. Car is so much nicer to drive. Cruze at 78 at 2800 RPM's

Pulled my 2.88 from an 85 SD in forty minutes, The third one I have pulled I might add so I learned a few things in the process.
I undo the bolts holding the diff up to the body and drop it on the emergency cables. This gives easy access to the big bolts holding the diff to the sub frame. Then undo the flange to drive shaft. Then undo the axle bolts and with a brass bar punch in the axle stubs just to get them moving. Now drop the diff all he way, sliding out the axles and wire to a 2 x 4 so not to ruin the universals and boots. Revers to get into the new body and never open the rear door or mess with the axles. Just my way of doing it the easy way.
