Exclamation 1989 300D n/a exhaust help!

I decided that my 6cyl n/a 300D was a little too quiet today, and that I wanted the exhaust to flow a little better to possibly pick up a little fuel efficiency. I ended up cutting the cat and muffler off. Long story short, I couldn't finish the exhaust due to improper planning and now the car sounds like garbage, and doesn't even sound like a diesel anymore. I personally prefer loud exhausts, but this one just might be too much to handle. That being said, what kind of exhaust mods have you all done? currently the exhaust ends about right under my driver's seat. I was curious if it would sound better simply routed out the back like stock, but leaving off the mufflers still. I'm also curious if backpressure matters on these engines. I know my pickup does not need backpressure, being a turbocharged application. I didn't know if this held true for n/a diesels. Any help or input is greatly appreciated as the car is more than likely going in to get fixed tomorrow afternoon. I also do not have any emissions regulations where I am located.

Cat on a diesel? If so, you can simply add another muffler, perhaps an aftermarket unit.

Well I really don't have neighbors to worry about, I'm in a fairly rural area. I will price out a 2.5 inch exhaust. And by 'cat' i mean the thing before the big muffler in the back. I assumed it was a cat anyways, I could be wrong.

I see, MB refers to it as a central muffler.

Could you post a recording? Lots of turbo diesels are running around with straight pipes (including mine), but very few NA ones. The only ones I've heard were a 6.2 with open headers (sounded good) and a 6.9 International similarly equipped (sounded kind of good).

BTW, I found this on youtube. I like the 190 with the 606 swap the most:

Wow, so that video was really sweet, and made me really jealous of everyone that has a turbocharged engine with these cars. It looks like those guys can actually make some power! That 190 was a bad little unit! That Volvo with the hood exit was sweet too. Curious about the DPF deleted CDI too, as my mother drives something similar to that. As far as the trucks, I think the 6.0L V8 PowerStrokes sound the best, you oughta look at some videos of those. My 300D definitely does not sound like those at all. I don't really know how to describe the sound. I'll try to get a video of it as it sits tomorrow. Hopefully next week I can get a 2.5" system put on it... In the meantime, is there a site that sells any performance mods for these things? Such as injectors or nozzles or a fuel pump upgrade? I know it won't be as Awesome as one with a turbo, but there's gotta be something I can modify,,, right?

Perhaps the super turbo diesel site can help.
