OM602 Idle fuel burn rate

-10F is blue moon cold in the Buffalo area, and my 190D is easier to keep running than start after a good sleep at that temp. Anyone have an idea of the idle fuel burn rate? I'm wondering if 6 hours worth is less than the amount of K1 I'll have to burn in the torpedo heater in the morning.

OM602 2.5 NA.

I'm thinking that the exact answer to the question is not well known.

I'm thinking in your case, tonight, it will be worth it.

Agree to both points. Unless you have a block heater. My 240D had one and it was nice. Unfortunately, the Houston based original owner of my 300D speced it without.

Block heater is certainly your best bet. But, if the cord isn't already installed, it will be difficult to install in this kind of cold. If memory services, you can't reach the plug from the top....have to go from below on the 602.

But, in answer to your question, I suspect it's fairly minimal. Would be worth doing at least one night and seeing how much the fuel gauge goes down.

I have let a 240D and a 300SD idle overnight several times. I could not detect any movement of the fuel gauge.

I once kept the 300SD running for about 4 days. This included overnight idling and idling while at work. Long idles (over 12 hours) moved the fuel gauge a slight amount.

The biggest risk in leaving a car running unattended may be developing a coolant or oil leak and not being there to shut it down.

Particularly on a 60x. Engine block heater combined with the charcoal briquette on a pan might help.

Is the engine tired? My OM601 2.2 has been firing up in -Temps the past couple weeks no problem. I started it stone cold at -7 the other day with a 20-25 second glow and it fired off (rough and unhappy at first) within 1-2 engine rotations. Engine has ~275k on it....but new injector nozzles, delivery valve seals...timing chain...hydro lifters.

Normally I plug it in at home but at work I can't....so it will often sit 8.5-9 hours in subzero temps before I start it again.

It starts WAY better than my OM617 used to especially in these temps. With the 617 I'd have to glow two cycles then let it crank 10+ seconds before it would start firing and running.

Cold misfire on 1 cyl, and I don't think the block heater was working last Friday. Cleaned up the terminals and it seems to take 0-5F ok.
