W210 Fil/Tinting over Driver's Side Mirror

Both of my W210's have some sort of film/tinting over the driver's side mirror. On the 98 it's starting to peel.

Was this standard or is it some sort of aftermarket thing? I don't know that I need/want it but thought I'd ask before attempting to remove it.

over the mirror? I have the auto darkening side view mirror on my 2000, its tied to the interior rear view mirror to detect light difference back to front.

I dont think the tinting material is pasted onto the glass

Maybe that's what's going on. Upon closer inspection, there's nothing really to peel off...even thought it looks like there is. Most of the mirror is brownish but there are parts of the top that are silver. Something has clearly deteriorated over the years.

The driver's outside mirror has an auto-self-dimming feature. It is driven by the sensor in the interior rear view mirror.

Apparently after years of environmental exposure the self-dimming layer fails and stays a permanent bronze color. I have this issue too.

The mirror glass is pretty easy to replace. Crank the housing all the way backwards and look in the gap. There is a wire clip slipped over a peg. Using a screwdriver lift that wire clip over the peg and pull off the exterior housing.

The mirror glass sits on the motor pedestal retained with a spring clip either at the top or the bottom, can't remember at the moment.
