rehashing this old thread for a quick tip if anybody has one...

The old iceburg finally bit the bullet at about 430K on the clock. Lost the oil pump drive chain on the highway. massive sizing event on the bottom end. anyways, i picked up a used engine to replace it. Its been a little side project of mine for a while a while now as i am daily driving my CDI now.

I working on making two engines into one ready to go unit. Working on swapping the new cylinder head i have on to the working block.

I cant remove the old head! all the bolts are out. everything is disconnected
I cant break the damn thing free!
Anybody have any tips to loosen this thing up? Short of hitting it harder and harder.

I usually use a long breaker bar with the handle end stuffed in an exhaust port. I am not familiar with the 603, but if it is anything like a 617, there are two bolts in the timing chain hole. Don't forget them!

If you had removed all the head bolts, there are only 2 things that can hold the head in place.
1) The 2 bolts beneath the timing chain mentioned by Rollguy.
2) The coolant/fuel warming line on the right hand top side which goes to the oil filter area.

Did you remove the bolts under the cam? Also remove the 2 pins which is in the way of lifting the head. It has nothing to do to hold down the head. The head should come off.

Use engine compression? In desperation. Just make sure all fasteners are really out.

I wonder if someone used some type of adhesive treatment on the last gasket change. This problem is on the other engine you purchased? I figured you knew to get all the fasteners off the head from past experience.

Thanks y’all! Like a dummy I was missing the head bolts under the cam.

I did find the new hosting site for w124 zone.

Head is off now. Will be starting to put everything back together soon.
Hopefully in time for a 30th anaversary cruise
