Your delay of symptoms is totally consistant with a pretty dry cv joint. If the boots are still intact add some 75-90 gear oil with a turkey baster and tube.
After removing the small axle clamp. Replace it with a screw clamp when done. If you continue to drive with the semi dry joint eventually the noise will become constant and you will need a replacement axle. Use a small oil insertion tube to avoid stretching the old boot too much. If a boot itself is leaking either replace it or use another axle with good boots. It is just good preventative maintenance anyways. Even with good boots the original oil seems to get away over thirty years in many cases. I would start with perhaps three ounces of oil. The original cv joints are very tough and worth saving when possible. Your description indicates the dry joint is saveable right now. Easy to do if the boots are intact and avoids possible towing charge down the road and paying someone in an uncontrolled situation to deal with it. |

From your explanation, I'm pretty sure its the driveshaft center support. Get under the car and grab the DS and try to move it up and down and side to side in the middle. It'll be pretty obvious if the supports bad.

I can push the driveshaft up about an inch. The rubber on the center support is dry and cracked i plan on replacing it but i cant find any marks on the driveshaft from contacting the bottom of the car

Im not sure if this is related but i think it is. Today while driving to school i didnt hear the knocking sound when i would make slight turns with the freeway my car would start shaking prstty bad. It would usually stop when the wheels went back straight but sometimes i would have to let off the gas to get it to stop
Will axels from a 300 turbo diesel work for a 240d? |
