Another PSA for Vacuum for your Transmission (W123s especially)
Just another reminder how utterly important to make sure your vacuum system is 100% in working order before you try sort out your W123's shifting woes. After sitting for a year and a motor transplant, my '91 300TD's vacuum system was messed up (rear hatch wouldn't lock and unlock with central system) and the shifting was hard from 1st to 2nd and it hunted between 3rd and 4th a lot. I would rather wrench on my '60s motorscooters than troubleshoot vacuum issues, so I let it go for awhile. Then the tumbler fell out of the driver's door and I had to do something. My favorite indy guy, GroupOne Motorwerks, sorted the vacuum while replacing the door lock and now not only do all the locks work again, the shifting is as good as it was before. No need to sort anything else out.
Moral of the story, as has been stated many times, don't mess with your transmission until you know your vacuum is working well.
