I agree... and if not going for concourse quality, put Michelin tires on! I don't have a problem with BFG's but Michelin are more of a "Mercedes tire" IMO.

this guy may have a fuel tank in his garage. many wealthy garages have them, and fuel trucks fill it up. so he may have had a pump to keep his prizes topped off.

the price paid for fuel could be his calculations from total volume of fuel.
either way, yeah... kooky.
8.5 gallons of idling? That's a lot ....not good for the engine!

And the tire shine looks tacky. It'd look nicer natural.

There's got to be an error somewhere. On Sept 22 1986 @ 1968 kilometers, it averaged 39.28 MPG. Is that possible?

I hope that I never have to try selling any of you guys a car. I'm going to guess that someone can find at least 3 things wrong with mine in the picture below. If I took 4 different close up pictures, I'd be lucky to get $500 for it.

How are you figuring the mpg? Only way to know is if the tank is filled after a known distance traveled. .. since we have no way of knowing if he filled the tank after the miles accumulated we can't determine mpg.

It's incredible all right. God, look at that wood! But I'd "really" like to see similar close ups of those 108's etc in the background.

Yeah, the wood is amazing and I'm usually not a fan of that interior color because it doesn't look too good after 30 years, but this example is the best I've seen.

I've seen cars that nice at the Classic Center (both W116's- a 300SD and a 6.9), and this one should be there as well. If the reserve is not met at 30 Grand, I can only imagine that the seller has the reserve close to what the car cost new. Even at that, whoever thought they would make money by keeping it that long, is probably in for a big surprise. A dollar was worth quite a bit more in 1982 than today.

Wow that's nice.
It's a shame the car never got used.
The better values in the realm this one's in are the ones with maybe 10K to 30K or more miles on them. Half the dollars or less too, versus this one. I'd buy one in a minute with those miles, but not at these dollars - this one's just not worth buying at the present bidding, into the funny money zone IMO.

It has way too many miles on it to not drive it. However, it gives pause to driving it because it is nice - even with those miles on it. The 'no-miles' (under 20 miles) cars are the ones that more easily bring the BIG dollars. Not this one with 1.5K miles.

Sans sunroof would have been a more authentic German luxury sedan. Esp. in that timeframe. Being of Canadian origin, the dealer or buyer didn't want to pay for, or have a sunroof.

True. That car would have been a very bad time investment based on the $40K it cost.

Otto, your SD is worth at least $502...

(Just kidding of course.. I like that shade of blue on your car!)

Assuming the kilometer readings are not from the trip odometer but a cumulative total, on Sept 22 1986:

1968 / (27.5+30.4+39.8+20) = 16.7 kilometers/ liter = 39 mpg

I can't see paying the current $34K bid (hasn't even passed the reserve). Way too expensive for a daily driver, especially since current diesels are much improved. I don't think there is much show market for these cars, not like 60's muscle cars. Unless you have a private museum, where is the value?

Yeah, but we have no way of knowing if other fueling has occurred.

The 82 Sd is never going to achieve above 26 mpg stock... Absolutely zero possibility of exceeding 30 mpg...
So, there is certainly additional fuel in the calculation we are not privy to. For instance, the vehicle likely was filled prior to delivery, so add in additional 21 gallons... Or more.
