3 idiot light always on

I have a 1983 240d with 320k. The battery, brake(round light wear indicator) and brake light constantly on.

I haven't had a chance to pull the front wheels to check the brake pads but it seemed strange to me that all 3 lights came on are roughly the same time.

Do you guys think the battery is dying at the same time that the front brakes are failing or could this be an electrical problem?

Thanks.

pete

I will check that but the car is starting every cold morning.
I guess it could also be the voltage regulator.

Is there a test to check to see if you have a problem with the alternator vs the voltage regulator?
I used to put my volt meter on the battery while the car was running. If the voltage was registering in the 13's then the alternator was ok. Not sure if I should first replace the voltage regulator if it's only in the 12's.

Start by checking your battery voltage with the engine off and with the engine running. Should be charging at 13 volts. if not then pull out the voltage regulator and check the carbon brushes for wear.

The brake pad wear light circuit is completed by a connection to ground. Either the pads ARE worn or the wiring is frayed and shorted to ground. The brake light could be the E brake switch, low brake fluid, shorted wires, etc. The battery light is odd and needs further investigation. Its behavior is different depending on the situations, and if I remember correctly some if it is counterintuitive.

On my prev 83 240D once several lights came on, but they didn't come back on the next start.
Another time it happened when driving, and I noticed high temperature (and missing alt/water pump belt).

I never found out if this was by design...

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a few mins?
