W123 Sub-Forum, anyone?
Hello All,
I used to follow such forum back at Sch. Auto, and I enjoyed it very much. With like 10-20 posts a day I could read them all and respond often. While I do like this forum is provided, it gets overwhelming with so many posts, most of them not related to my chassis. I wish there was a forum or sub-forum for all the W123 cars, gasoline and diesel together. I actually think other chassis numbers should be there too. What other users think? (I realize there may be complications like quoting from older posts, etc.)

Often times I post in the DD section anyway, even if it is a suspension question for a 280E. The majority of 123's in America are Diesel, so there is a lot more action on DD than in Tech Help for a 123. As far as separating the chassis #s into different groups, I would vote not to. We don't want to look like B*** W****

I'd say no.
Too many engine/transmission parts are shared between the different chassis.

I enjoy reading posts/getting info on different models. Knowledge is power.
I prefer this forum over others for the reason that all diesels are together instead of split up.

Instead of that, maybe have a "W123" header or icon one can select to identify the thread as W123-specific. Other chassis models can also be available if the discussion is limited to such chassis.

I agree that lumping the diesels together is not the best organization, but nether is lumping it by chassis. I'm a members of the rival forum who lumps things by chassis, and I can never find what I'm looking for there because the majority of om617 powered vehicles are w123s, and I drive a w126, so I really need to pick w123 owners brains. That is why I'm "practicing" member of this forum.
Putting all diesel together seems to work well because I find that if your the kind of Mercedes owner who wants to repair your car in your driveway, with a large hammer, you likely own a diesel. Might as well put all of us... how should I say it... Masters of Yankee Ingenuity ... in one place

I am OK with the way things are.
Having comments on other Diesel Engines and other models of Mercedes gives a more comprehensive view of Diesel Engine issues which quite often are similar to Mercedes Diesel Issues. The above also helps me learn more.

I strongly vote no.
You have Benzworld if you associate primarily by your chassis number. And you have PP if you associate primarily by your engine/fuel type.

I think it makes more sense to lump cars together by engine type rather than body style; if you think of it, most of the common engine problems are very fuel-type specific, whereas body issues are not as different among different cars from the same manufacturer from the same era. For example, "My engine isn't starting well" means very different things on a gasser than on a diesel, but "My car clunks when I turn left," or "My window motor blew" are much less model-specific, given similar vehicles made by the same manufacturer during the same general era.

Better subject lines in posts would help
I understand why someone would want another forum, but there are guys in the current DD forum who may have newer cars now, but have big expertise to offer from when they owned w123s. Not sure if they would hang out in a w123 subforum.
It would be a BIG help if people would write more informative subject lines. Stuff like WOW, HELP!, Car won't start, Not again (etc. etc.) don't really give much clue to what's in the actual post....

John Vstech does a pretty good job as a mod cleaning up thread titles from what I've noticed. I think the organization is good. I agree much more traffic on the diesel page than the gas page here.

My curiosity and needs tend to cross chassis, as do the 60x and 61x engines. I think stovepiping things by chassis would tend to divide up valid and useful engine discussions. I think I'd have to look harder and would learn from fewer people if I saw this community through an imposed W123 or W201 filter. I can see putting the performance and alternative fuel topics into subfora because they tend to draw reactionary pushback. With them behind a figleaf, FSM thumpers and purists can look the other way unless something particularly begs the restatement that billions were spent making it that way.
