Pre-Owned 2005 MERCEDES-BENZ E-Class E320 CDI for sale

23k miles.... Drive dynamic seats, fold down rear seats, bi-xenon lamps, Nappa leather interior, perlite silver paint.....Whoa! If it has maintenance records from the dealer selling it and it is priced right, this would be a great diesel with a potential for many miles!

If someone if in the market on this board, please take a look at this one......

....wood steering wheel too and Parktronic and DVD Nav!! Only few things I do not see as far as options: seat warmers, seat coolers and HK Sound system.

chronometers 03-08-2015 03:55 PM

Correction....it does have seat warmers

This one's loaded to the gunwales too including panoramic roof and not ubiquitous silver - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI Diesel . VIN is wdbuf26j35a646077 in case the ad disappears. Pity it's seen better days.

Priced at: $21,695...

High price.

It is an example though that there are still low mile examples out there.

What is ideal mileage for used one of these? You want enough that any model launch issues have been sorted but not enough that it would potentially be an unreliable road vehicle.

shertex 03-09-2015 12:49 PM

I think they're dreamin' at the price...75k miles would be ideal in my book. But I'm probably biased because I picked up my 91 with 77k miles and my 98 with 73k miles! :D

Yes, just enough miles any major stuff, will have failed. Most will have been taken care of under warranty.

That's not what I'm finding over the years in my CDI-forensic research. I have to agree with shertex on this. The sweet spot of miles is 40K to 70K miles. There's a lot of empirical history of mechanical fails this car model may encounter in the 20K to 60K miles range. Warranty repair records will verify this. Unfortunately, the details on this car presented are somewhat sketchy. The Carfax indicates huge time gaps in it's maintenance record, and almost no parts fails. The all important VMI might be able to fill-in some blanks here. An eyes-on, 360* inspection would be necessary on this car too. To me, this car represents a very expensive car to buy and own going forward.

chronometers 03-11-2015 11:01 PM

Agree ....think 50-70k is ideal sweet spot. Mine had 89k which was as close as I could come. Still if you get a low price for well documented high mileage one, that can be good too.

Many of the 2005 cdi seem to have had teething problems early in their lives. Most should have been resolved under warranty but only close review of VMI will confirm thus.

Skid Row Joe 03-11-2015 11:28 PM

I have to go along with that.

The problem associated with buying and driving a very low mileage ageing used car is twofold. First of all, the cream-puff premium the buyer paid for the car disappears as the miles are loaded on it, and, secondly, the parts and system fails that are part and parcel of a normal pattern of 15K a year then showing-up on it's VMI are absent - because the car never eclipsed the average and usual mileage failure number. It gets worse. A car this age with very few miles on it, will likely be slammed with these shoulda-happened failures in short order. Of course, the warranty has long, long expired on it too.

This vehicle is pushing 11 years old and with 23k miles that is only 2k/year or less than 50 mi/wk. That means the vehicle was either driven a very short distance often (the proverbial old lady that drove it only to church on Sunday) or it sat for long periods of time.

Either of these are not beneficial to the longevity of the moving parts. Machines are meant to be used regularly.

10 to 15k miles/year coupled with regular maintenance is what keeps the moving parts happy.

JimFreeh 03-13-2015 05:55 AM

One nit that was important to me....

Early W211s had a different console top, with two flip up armrests vs the tambor door.

The early style doesn't seem to hold up very well.
Remember, you could buy an *05* CDI in mid 04....

Jim

Flip up or Butterfly armrests look better (cleaner) in my opinion and are more comfortable.....I am used to always having a center armrest in an MB. The later design has no padded armrest

MB probably changed the design because of the mechanized passenger cup holder which was associated with it....they probably break off if not carefully used.

The '06 and Up consoles have the sliding-panel door, with two terrific cup holders, and enough of a shelf to comfortably rest your elbow. There's also a cavity that will hold another (3rd) cup or bottle if need be.

Posts #8 & #10 captioned below, cover this......

I can't count the number of CDIs I've assessed in the past several years. The lack of any warranty work or records on a super-low mileage aging/(ed) car, is a bad sign, regards the CDI. This car could easily cost up to $3K to even $5K in it's first couple years of ownership going forward - if it were to be driven a lot of miles....
