Driver Door Bounce
About half the time when swinging the driver door shut on the 84 300SD it sort of bounces and only half latches shut. There is nothing in the door jamb to keep it from closing properly.
Is there a preferred lubricant to put on the door's latch mechanism to help it work better? Should the old lube be cleaned off first?

A good 12 years ago I had this problem with the 85 300D. Took it to a independent shop.
The guy used a small brush and some grease to lube the latch. After that it closed like butter. Before I had to slam the door to get it to latch. You might take a cloth and some gas to wipe out the old gunky grease. Or if you are ambitious, remove the latch mechanism and wash it out in a pan of gas, blow it out with some air, then relube it. actually, this is a very common issue on the older mb's...
each latch has a plastic ramp in the doorjamb section. that ramp pushes the latching mechanism into the home position. if it's broken, the door will not latch without SUPER HARD SLAMMING... the fix is simply replace the rubber ramp.

Do a Google search for W123 locking eye kit. You'll find an outfit in Thailand that sells them. Their website is kind of wonky but it works and you pay using Paypal. I ordered one of their kits and it came promptly and works like a charm.
Read up on how to pull the strikers and avoid rounding out the 5mm allen head bolts - use heat or impact or both, like I did after ruining the first one. Had to drill it out. Also there will be shims to keep track of. Also draw a line around the striker plate so you can get it back on in exactly the same position it was in. Once you get the strikers off it is easy to pull the rubber inserts out and install the plastic locking eye which will probably be totally or partially missing. It's an easy repair and very satisfying. |

The rear Door Striker for the rear door will fit the front doors on the same side.
The Junk yards are full of them. I have removed them, and they work great. The rear doors don`t get used as much as the fronts. Charlie

Left rear is the one to grab. They are also common across several series, W123 and R107 for one.... Jim

the 123 is a different design from the 126, but they work fine. they just have a different outer design.

I have taken all the door handles and lock mechanisms off my W126 and soaked them in gasoline to remove the old grease and debris. After cleaning with a brush and re-lubricating them, the doors open and close very nicely. I previously replaced and adjusted all the door strikers, though.
The worst part about having nicely closing doors in your car is that everyone who gets in likes to slam them. I usually give a lecture shortly after...
