1995 E300D wiring Plug Question

Hello friends,

Just finished replacing the glow plugs on the 95; And somehow It seems that we have come up with an extra cable. Do not remember unplugging the cable in the first place it also seems under a first impression like it has not been used.

Not sure if it has to do with the engine block heater? if this car had one.

As always all of your help is always greatly appreciated.

Take a look at the pics

Thank you.

Guys. I also need to know where does this go.

It seems like a part where one would slide the chains to hoist the engine?

Your car has a block heater (but may or may not have the cord installed). But the cable in the pick is not related to the block heater.

On my 1996 606 N/A, that would plug into the electric vacuum valve on the underside of the intake manifold and there are 2 of them. The "Y" vacuum fitting attaches to the valve and controls the intake runner flaps.

On my car, all of the flaps have been removed from the spindles. Someone in the past may have just left the valve unplugged to disable them on your engine.

Newer engines throw codes when the valve is unplugged, yours may not.

The head hoisting hole was probably attached with the rear 3 intake manifold bolts. If you are not pulling the engine, you can just leave in the trunk somewhere.

That wiring plug is not connected anywhere on the OM606.910 engine. The vacuum solenoid plugs are 90 degree right angle plugs just like the ELR plug on the pump.

The lifting eye hook goes to the rear most screws of the intake manifold.

Hope that helps.

Flap!

The 1997 E300D has switches on the two intake manifold flaps (one in the crossover, one in the manifold) that tell EDS whether the flaps are actually opening or not. If they don't send the signals, a code is set. It is possible that the cable subcontractor added the extra plug (there actually should be two) whether needed or not. Also possible that the cable was replaced sometime during the life of the car; the replacement cables may have been meant for 1996-97 and the flap connector was ignored if the engine didn't have flap switches.

I've never seen a flap with a switch as the 1997 models are supposed to have. Anyone with a 1997 E300D willing to post a picture showing the flap, its actuator, and an electrical switch would earn my gratitude. Interestingly, EPC lists the same part number for the flaps for both 1996 and 1997. I suppose it reduces the number of parts in inventory.

Personally, I'd like to have flap switches in my '95 E300D, not for EDS but to operate the LEDs I've added to the car's tach, which illuminate as each flap changes state. Currently, the LEDs illuminate when the electrical signals are sent to the vacuum solenoids but that doesn't mean that the flap actually moves (could have a solenoid or vacuum failure). Here's a link to a short video showing the LEDs lighting up as the RPMs climb and the flaps open:

Great.

I wanted to take the opportunity and thank you guys for your replies and help.

The car was finished up last night. It is all working in good standing.

Took care of a few other things. Sun visor vanity lights and the two headrests that had quit working as well.

for the rear headrests not working now, check for a white or gray vacuum pipe near the brake booster going into the car body, that goes directly to the vacuum solenoid in the rear for the headrest release. However if your A/C functions and buttons route air to different directions then the vacuum system is intact.

however I think your problem is a blown fuse or such, the sunvisor lamps and rear headrests share the same circuit I think. Check all fuses in the engine bay fuse box.

Thanks Zulfiqar.

I was actually working in the front ones. I changed out the rails and voila!

The rear ones are in good working order.
