OM 606 oil filter change?

How do you separate the filter cartridge from the lid? I fell like I'm missing something obvious, but I can't do it.

Easiest way is to hold onto the lid and tap the pin protruding beneath the filter on the garage floor. Tap, tap, tap and it usually slides off.

I just pulled it off firmly.
