Is this procedure discussed somewhere on the forum, I'de like to try it.

2005 CDI - 193,000 miles on factory ATF

EDIT: A word of warning- release air from the blow gun VERY SLOWLY at first! And be prepared to make a mess. Also, hold it there to plug the hole till the pressure subsides. If you remove the rubber tip from the hole too soon, you will take an ATF bath! (don't ask me how I know this!). This method gets most if not all the fluid out of the trans, cooler, and torque converter, so it is worth the mess to do so. Most of these 722.6XX transmissions ('03-'06) do not have a converter drain plug (the W210 722.6XX DOES have a converter drain plug). The '07 and newer 722.9XX has a converter drain plug as well.

Hi guys, excited and a bit nervous new W211 CDI owner from Canada here.

Just a quick intro and a most importantly a huge thanks for this thread and all the info in here! It was invaluable in my months of research before buying my new (to me) 2005 E320 CDI Elegance.

I am the third owner, 126k miles. Car is clean, straight, no accidents, no rust, no codes, no black death. Everything works. Will need new tires soon, (Thinking some Michelin Premier AS would be a good match for this car)

So basic CDI, sunroof, 4-zone AC, split-folding rear seats. No nav.

Picked it up for $5.5K (~$7K CDN)

I am an avid DYIer but realize there will be a big learning curve with this car. Looking to pick a basic iCarsoft MB II scanner and service manual DVD to start. The plan is to build up a decent specialized tool arsenal and eventually get the MB Star system. Just not crazy about running an old XP laptop. I'm an IT guy by trade and have 15+ years of experience with Vmware and over the years managed to get all kinds of external hardware to talk to VMs via serial/parallel ports so i'm tempted to give it a shot.

Will first catch up on the basic maintenance and go from there. I work for an auto-parts business, so that will help, a lot.

Some pics of my CDI, just picked it up this morning:

Same color as mine (ext), but you have the black interior. I have to admit, I have not seen that color combo. Usually the lighter tan color interior. You will thoroughly love that car! Enjoy, Rich

Thumbs up

These are great cars and you got a great example! At the price you got it for, how can you go wrong?

I put a set of Michelin Premier AS on mine and really like them.

You'll enjoy rolling the miles up on this.

Thanks guys.

The interior color is more of a dark grey. Indeed, I havent seen any in this color combo while shopping online.

VIN decoder says:
Interior AMARETTA/LEATHER/NAPPA/SEMI-ANILINE - BLACK/ANTH. (831A)
Paint 1 FLINTGRAY - METALLIC PAINT (368U)

Early this morning the temp was hovering near 0-F here, so figured it would be good day for a cold start test. Engine fired right up after 2-3 sec crank, vibrated a bit for maybe 5 sec then immediately smoothed right out. Got a "Low battery, convenience functions not available" message for maybe a min or two which then went away. Will keep an eye on the battery unless this is considered normal at these temps? Mind you, the car hasn't been driven much in the last 6 months, so may just need a nice 30min highway run to get fully charged.

After a 10 minute warm up, took it for a 20 minute spin in the city. Great driving car! A keeper for sure.

My initial budget was almost double the 5.5K purchase price, plus i budgeted $2K in maintenance. I'm well below that of course, so anything that needs to get done to catch up on the maintenance will be done.

Just cant wait for some warmer weather to arrive!

I had been looking for an '05-06 for about 2-3 years. I actually test drove one in Phoenix before I saw this one on the local crgslst. The Phx car was a wreck, so I decided to wait.. sure glad I did.

I bought my '06 with 182,000 miles... now approaching 200k. It has been to CA twice and Vancouver, BC last summer. I averaged 43 mpg on the stretch from Salt Lake City to Albuquerque. I bled the SBC system and reset the internal brake application counter to zero soon after I bought the car.

What a car

I thought it was Platinum Blue from the photo (the color of my car), so I guess we don't have the same color car. I would expect the darker color interior in a grey, silver or black car.

Ours is platinum blue with a light grey interior.

I know of two others locally, one belongs to a MBCA member and the other a MG club member, both are platinum blue with grey interior as well. Both bought new...... Funny how we 3 all ended up with the same color/year/engine.

We bought ours from Tyler in '13, with 169K.
Currently at 210K and running great, my daughter is driving it now that we have the '14 BlueTEC.

The only significant problem we've had to deal with was the "black death" injector issue that was present when we bought the car. I picked up the tool for the fix, biggest headache was the black goo that filled the front half of the head cavity.

Also, if you plan to work on one of these yourself, you need to invest in the SDS/Xentry computer. Not cheap, but a must have! Makes diagnosing much more pleasant

We installed a set of the same tires on our 05 CDI in December.
Very nice tires, bought them from Tire Rack, and their feedback indicated the Premier had the best snow/ice ratings in the category.

I recall that they took very little weight to balance, one was good out of the box, the worst was 3/4 of an ounce, using my Hunter dual plane balancer. Michelin seems to be superior to others, WRT balance. I just finished repainting the alloys on the 85 300TD, and the 14" Michelins on that car took 3/4 of an ounce or less per wheel, as well when I remounted the tires.

I get this message with some regularity when it's cold outside and I haven't driven it for a couple of days. I have a good battery tester and I'm confident the battery is in good shape. Never have any difficulty starting the car. Others have had same experience. For the time being, I'm chalking it up to a glitch/gremlin. Will probably replace battery before next winter "just because." Will be interested to see if that changes anything.

Funny, I thought the same thing from the original ad photos and even in person the first time I saw the car in an indoor garage with fluorescent lighting. When I came back the second time, only when the car was outside and it was a sunny day did I realize it was grey. It seems that under cooler lights the blue tint of this metallic color is more prominent.

My fav for this car is Silver on Black, but the only one I found that was not a basket case, an original owner 90K immaculate car 300 miles away but the owner wanted $13K and didnt want to budge an inch on the price.

@shertex, thanks for confirming what I was suspecting for the low batt warning! Maybe I'll dig into this issue eventually, if it actually becomes a problem and when I'm a bit more familiar with the platform.

I get this same warning in my '07 every time I turn on the ignition. It has been this way for years, even with the previous owner. It has had a new battery put in recently (74,000 miles), as well as a new battery years ago after the car was purchased at 26,000 miles. I just press the up arrow and it goes away. I have checked every system with my MB II, and nothing shows up that gets rid of the warning. I imagine it will take at least an Xentry system to find the underlying problem. I believe the '07 does not have an auxiliary battery like the earlier W211's. Putting a fresh aux battery on your '03-'06 W211 may fix this problem......Rich
