W123 Fuel Tank Collapse And Repair

The exhaust vent hose blocked and imploded my tank-

bending my fuel sending unit housing as well as crushing off the copper wire.

I've found how to repair the fuel sending unit and feel confident I can restore it to working order.

Now...how to re-inflate that tank- need help with that.

Also- I found a braided hose on the bottom of the tank that was broken- have to repair that also- it's a small 3-4" piece with a simple clamp on both ends- any words regarding this are appreciated also- seems simple enough, however.

Finally- the vent contraption is located under the driver rear floorwell area, right? As long as it's blowing freely through, it's good? Words on that would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Jay

I don't know what a tank from the Junk Yard would cost but you would get another sending unit with it.

If you posted the general area you live in there might be a Member that has a Parts Car.

Both of the Hoses at the Bottom of My Tank have been replaced with 5/16" ID regular Fuel Hose form the Autoparts Store. Out here it is either GoodYear or Gates Hose and it is rated for Diesel Fuel.

If you want something that can take Bio Fuels you can use the same size Fuel Injection Hose. As that Hose is liked with Viton.

On the Fuel Tank Screen Hose if you grind or file off the crimped Collar you can simply use the Regular Fuel Hose and a Hose Clamp to replace the Crimped Collar.

Not only the vent must be clear, the vent line that attaches to the tank must also be clear. Often that line also clogs. Try blowing air through it, if that doesn't work try snaking a wire thru it then blow some more. If it's still clogged you can either get a new tank with a good vent line or drill a hole in the filler cap, which could spill a little fuel..

Close off the vent line use compressed air sealed with a rag through the filler opening. The rag will provide a leak path so tje tank is not over pressurized and explode.

Will the car run with the sending unit detached?

I don't see why it wouldn't. The fuel gauge won't operate, but other than that, the car should run.

It should only need 1 or 2 psig. Take care not to pop it.

The problem I've run into is:
The part of the tank that is most imploded is right where the sending unit hangs.
I tried to put the fuel cap on, plug the vent hose and blow air into the hole where the sending unit sits. It doesn't seem this is going to be effective, unless I ran out of patience too soon- it just didn't seem like it was gonna get 'er done.
So I'm thinking of driving out to my mechanic's and have him put a dent puller on the tank from inside of the trunk....hopefully pull it out far enough to get the sending unit back in....then try to blow the tank up with compressed air through the fuel fill spout??? Can I really push enough air in there to do it?

Unfortunately, pnps puncture fuel tanks before letting them out in the yard... I have a few w123 and w126 tanks sitting around... But Ohio is a bit of a drive for it.

I have an extra tank out of an '83 300D.
I'm taking it that I should just replace the tank if I can't get it to re-expand.

Yeah, that really sucks that PNP pokes holes in every fuel tank.

How ever, I did come across one in a 85 300D they overlooked....and it had a full tank of fuel.

Here is another thread that is similar to this one, I posted a couple links on imploded tanks.

PSSSSSSSSHHHHH! when opeing filler cap?

Due to metal fatigue, I'd just replace it. You MIGHT be able to pop it out, but I'd always worry it could leak...
