Runaway
Going to be on holiday for a month starting tomorrow so I may not see replys and apologies. I'll just give the facts as I know them. Not taking the car. Sure would like to hear from anyone who has had the same or similiar event.
'87 Turbodiesel Wife started the car in the morning in the garage from cold; 50F normal start got out to change shoes standing beside the vechicle tying shoes (door closed) engne in park starts to accelerate fairly rapidly to the upper governed speed (I think) took less than 2 seconds She climbed in and switched off. Stopped OK. Inspected for any linkage or pedal interference. Nothing found Had dealer inspect for problem. Thorough inspection Nothing found. Dealer had a conference with head office. Nothing No maintenance done in the last 3 months, and last was an oil change by me. Acceleration was uniform indicating to me that it was not breathing in lube oil. There was quite a bit of smoke probably the usual for a carboned up exhaust. Want to get to the bottom of this. Thanks very much |

I don't know much about the 601-603 engine management system, but it seems like my mom's 602 equipped 190D has some sort of idle stabilization system. I assume this function would apply to other 60x engines.
Is it possible that this idle stabilization system went bizzerk for some reason? Or, did the cruise control system temporarily go south and try to fully engage the throttle? Other than that, it is possible that some sort of seal in the injection pump failed and caused the injected fuel quantity to increase--which just got worse as the engine revved higher. Those are the only 3 possibilities that come to mind... anybody got any other ideas or elaborations? -Joe |

Wow! A runaway diesel is like my deepest fear of all for my car. I've even been thinking of putting a small CO2 fire extinguisher in the engine compartment just in case it ever happens! Do you normally run your oil level in the engine on the high side???

If it was a true runaway diesel, the IP stop lever would NOT have stopped the car as it would not be running off diesel, but oil.
The 60x engines do have some type of stabilzation managment system for the idle, when you revv the car, then sharply let off the throttle, it will dip down to 500 or 600 rpm then climb back up to 800 or so and give a slight shudder. You can set the idle (~600rpm to ~900rpm) via the dialable idle control knob near the fusebox. It is a circular switch that you lift up, turn then press back down. It is numbered 1 to 9, 1 being the lowest idle speed. There is actually quite a bit of engine managment computers on this engine compared to earlier diesels. I can't say as I know your problem but I would start by disconnecting the cruise control and lubricate all the thottle linkages. |

Ahhh - I bet it is your cruise control - in my old car i accedently hit the "ON" lever and the car started to rev to the top just as you describe - then I turned it off and it was fine after that - it took me awhile to discover what I had done as well. Try activating cruise while parked and see if it does anything - William
