The motor has very very low compression in cylinder #1 and metal shavings in the oil.

That looks like a manual trans engine in that picture.

Fair enough since I know nothing about 240Ds. Just wondering whether the VCV is an issue in such a swap.

SIXTO, I think there is the threaded holes for the 2 screws that bolts the VCV to the IP.
But I`ll check my 80 240 to see if Iam right.....Hang loose.

When I swapped in the 4-spd into the 85 300D, I just removed the VCV. It has nothing to do with the IP,

Charlie

Checked the IP and there is 2 drilled and tapped holes.

The VCV will in fact be needed for the auto trans to work properly. However, my '81 240D has a 4 spd manual from the factory, and has a VCV. I am not sure why it is there, as it is not needed for the trans to shift.

^ My 82 manual 240 came with a VCV, it was obviously unused, I removed and sold it.

A couple questions for all of you experienced w123/240d enthusiasts. I'm curious if anyone has ever run into a flywheel balance problem. I haven't been able to find one link online to someone experiencing vibration from an unbalanced flywheel (if anyone has a link like that, I'd love to read about it before I do my swap). Also, The 4-cyl engine in my 1983 240d is an om-616? I'm still trying to learn as much as I can about these cars.

I would balance the flywheel. Some have skipped it and been fine; others have skipped it and had their teeth rattled out, and, as my hygienist says, dentures are overrated.

Besides, it would stink to basically have to do the whole job over again if the flywheel causes a shake.

OM615: Used in the US before 1974 -- 2.2L diesel.
OM616: Your engine, used in the US from 1974 to 1983. The OM615 bored out to 2.4L.
OM617.91: A 3.0L five -- a crude way to describe it is as an OM616 with an extra cylinder on the back. The "1" after the nine indicates a nonturbo.
OM617.95: The OM617.91 with a turbo.

I took the flywheel and the auto flex disk to be balanced when i did my swap but they were both neutral balanced.

A few years ago when I swapped in the 4-spd from a 240 into the 85 300D,
I had a Hot Rod performance shop balance the 2 FW`s. The 240 was off by 10 grams from the auto FW. what ever that is.

So they drilled some holes to get her in balance to the auto FW.

Not to go off topic, but do you experience any unpleasant vibs in the car with the 616 flywheel?
