Had a problem like this awhile ago on my 82 300D.The latch plate has 2 screws holding it to the interior of the glovebox, over the years the screws had come loose and one had even dropped out.Make sure both these screws are tight and secure.Bear

I haven't looked at a glovebox from a W126 chassis, but if it's anything like my 116 and 123, they do come apart with basic handtools. There is an outfit called Performance Products that sells replacement parts for glove boxes. You could take yours apart, see it you can tighten anything up, or if somehing is broken get the part number off the broken piece and look it up in the "parts shop" at the top of the screen.
