190D electric fan install- temperature switch suggestions?
 

I may be installing an electric fan in my 190D 2.5. The belt snapped a couple of weeks ago because the tensioner pulley went and I think it may have damaged the fan clutch. The fan now has a noticeable wobble in it. The clutch is tight but I am afraid the bearing may have gotten damaged. I have been toying around with the idea of converting to an electric fan but may have a reason to now. Sure I could replace the fan clutch but that's about $90 and will take a week to get here, plus the fan itself may need to be replaced as well anyway as it is pretty nicked up, that's another $80 or so (I forget the dealer price).

I'm going to check it out on Saturday if the dealer gets the correct bolts from MBUSA for the water pump. They thought that the bolts MBUSA sent them were too short and they were correct, the correct length is 35mm and the ones they were sent were 12mm so I have been waiting for those to get in so I could replace the water pump with a Mercedes remanufactured water pump (which was also part of that order).

If I have to replace the fan with an electric one I will need something to use as a switch for the low speed function. I have an electric Volvo fan sitting in my basement that was going to go on a different car but doesn't need it right away. It should fit in the stock fan shroud for the 190D. I may delete the aux fan for less restricted flow across the radiator and condenser.

I will have the high speed kick in at 105C and when the AC needs it like the aux fan normally would, but since I won't have a clutch fan, I need a temperature switch that will will kick on the fan at low speed somewhere around 88C-92C. Does one of the many temp sensors on the engine fit that description? If not, any suggestions of what cars I could get a switch like that from or websites that sell a switch like that?

I would prefer to use one of the extra sensor bungs in the engine for sensor vs one of the glue-on type temperature switches.

Any BMW fan switch will fit either in the spare ports in the upper radiator hose neck or in the water pump housing near the thermostat. On my om603 I initially insalled the fan switch in the hose neck then switched to the water pump housing with an 82c switch. This proved to turn on the fan less often and the temp was more stable. I used a temp switch meant for a mid 80s bmw 318i.

All 3 of the above will screw right into the spare ports on the Mercedes engine without any modification. Make sure to power the fan through a relay because the switches can't handle the full load of the Volvo fan.

I used a Volvo fan on my 190e and it was a tight fit. Using the stock shroud was impossible. I had to design and build a fan mount from scratch.

Great information! Thanks. I hope I can figure out how to mount it so as to make it easy to remove if I am working on the front of the engine.

I just finished installing a 12" spal fan pusher in my 190D... I wanted to put a 16" fan puller, but there just isn't enough room between the radiator and the motor accessories...

the fans are simply too wide.

if you find a decent fan less than 3" in width, let me know.

It may not fit, it just looks like it will. If it does, I'll be sure to tell you. Those Volvos are abundant in the yards.

The 2 stock pusher aux fans on the 2.6 set to high are more than enough cooling to handle that engine. You just have to find a way to switch them on at a lower temp instead of the stock 105c.

What is wrong with using the Aux fan? why spend the money? Just wire up a 90C toaster Normally Open ( NO ) thermostat to ground to activate the Aux fan. BTDT. Minimal $.

I would stick with automotive components designed to deal with vibration and exposure to the elements, but that's just me.

I have a similar setup controlling the low cut in of the two stock aux fans try auber instruments . they make a nice little controller with a built in relay and gauge. fully programmable and works with almost any sensor. The heading says egt but the unit can be set to read a standard temp sender, rtd coil, or thermocouple.

That controller is pretty cool. Would need to find a variable sensor to work with it. I am wanting to put an electric fan in place of the mechanical fan and 2 aux fans on my 2.5DT OM602. A/C season is starting and when idling the mech. fan does not draw much air and the aux fans blowing on the evap are not very efficient. I have been looking for a single or dual elec. fan that will fit between the water pump and radiator.

Confirmed, it did not fit. It looked like it might until I got the clutch fan off and slipped the radiator back in to check it. I guess this Volvo fan may go to my dad's 240D.

Unless I can swap over the 2.6 core support and radiator support and push the radiator forward enough to fit the fan when I put all of the stuff from my 190D into the 190E 2.3 I just bought.

This fan fit my 300d. Much lower profile than the Volvo fan.

I didn't want to pass the straps through the radiator hence the zip ties. Works quite well.
