1987 300TD bell housing rattle

i just got back from a trip to Oklahoma and have noticed i have an annoying ticking noise that is rpm related. i can sometimes faintly hear it at idle but not loudly. i put my car up on my friend's lift while idling and noticed it is for sure coming from the bell housing. it sounds like something is rattling around in there because it does get louder with higher rpm but is not a perfect "tick" with each revolution. quite noticeable when going around 30- 40mph with the window down driving past a bunch of cars or a curb. cant really hear with the windows up. i was thinking i maybe picked up a rock because there is no cover over the inspection hole but it would have to get between the flex plate and the torque converter/ flywheel. i hope its not my flexplate. i checked a couple of bolts i could get to through the hole and they were plenty tight. anyone had this happen to them??
