very slow sunroof 79 SD

family member recently inherited a 1979 300sd, one owner 189k silver over black, the sunroof is very slow and then sort of binds
up half way back. I don't want to force it obviously, what is the proper procedure for lubing the tracks?

Start with soap and water. Get the tracks clean and free of tree sap, etc...

Then get in there with a degreaser, and follow up with another round of detergent. Get all traces of the degreaser rinsed out.

Then apply the mb spec grease... Whunter used to sell a film canister of it for a few bucks... Pm him.

Just want to reinforce the importance of using the correct Mercedes lubricant for the sunroof. Anything else, including marine lubes (I tried) will gum up within months. Same problem for garage door lube, etc.

The Mercedes product does not attract dust or dirt, therefore stays a lubricant for a long time.

you should definitely take the time to clean it up and relube it, as it probably hasnt been done in a long time. but, sometimes the clutch on the motor slips, and tightening it down a little can help get it closed for now.

You may want to remove the cable from the tube and clean then re-lube that.
