OX CAT

Has anyone here changed there pre-turbo Ox-Cat on there 84-85 300d's to a 1986 design where you install the bypass pipe and then remove the center muffler and replace it with an aftermarket diesel convertor? I assume this would be legal because you are upgrading to a newer emissions year? I figure you would gain back power because the there is no obstructions before the turbo and you would be able to remove the rear muffler because the new location of the aftermarket diesel convertor would muffle the noise.
Just Wondering...

My '85 300SD did not have any aftertreatment so I guessing you have a CA-spec car. Before you mess with that I'd check with your local air quality folks and see what they say. Here in NC they give Diesels a free pass and cars older than OBDI get no inspection at all. I have no clue in your region.

And remember that '85 was the last year for the OM617 engine and '86 was the first year for the 606(?) so I wouldn't expect any of the bits to bolt on.

One alternative is to fit manifolds for the federal equivalent since that'll likely be less work and cost than fabricating or purchasing a test pipe. If emissions enforcement is a matter of conscience or legal risk - enforcement risk is between none and highly unlikely on an '85 vintage Diesel in California, fit a generic Diesel catalytic converter before the first muffler/resonator. 2" and 2.25" MagnaFlow brand cats are ~$90 from summitracing.com

rollguy makes a "test pipe". the 1986 you're talking about is the om603 that had it's trap ox recalled for an ox cat down stream with a new downpipe. but same idea on the cali 617's. i would not try to replace it with a new cat. i found my ox cat on my 603 badly clogged. diesels like to breathe to be happy

Trap cat test pipe finished - 1985 300D (CA) W123/OM617

Note that the Magnaflow diesel cats are not Carb certified...
