Just had a thought - when the engine was running there wasn't any bubbles in the diesel, this would mean that the injectors would have been sealed correctly.
I need to take a trip to Mercedes to get a spare key as I have only have the 1 with the car, will ask as to the cost of the injector return lines - anyone got a part number?

I think I have got to the bottom of what it actually is as there is no sign of the diesel levels increasing even though I have driven it around a bit. There is no evidence that the levels have ever been over where they were - eg no residue of it leaking all over the rocker cover.
I am going to be doing a service on the car soon and I have read that to get the air out of the fuel system it sometimes means that you need to undo the hard pipe slightly to get the air out. I have a feeling that when the fuel filter was changed last the garage simply opened the hard pipe nut which then meant that diesel leaked into those wells. I have a feeling that everything is perfectly fine but its a case of the previous service garage hadn't stopped diesel from being dripped into those wells.

What happened to me was that the hard line supports were missing under the cover. The lines were supported with zip ties.
When the injection event occurs, the line flexes (and expands) slightly due to the pressure. (In fact there are start of delivery measuring tools that take advantage of this effect.). If the line is not properly secured then it can fatigue crack. Mine finally cracked when I manipulated the nut removing/replacing the injectors for a rebuild. When I restarted the engine, it was spewing fuel from under the nut.
