Damn hijacking again. I get excited.

Nope not now. Next up, an 82 ferarri. And watching for a 108 chassis.

I've been chasing this same issue around for a year and a half.
Right OK - I got the wrong end of the stick - I didn't realise cylinder #5 had decided to get better.

That clicking / pinking sound is really irritating.

I must confess I've lost track of what you've checked so far (so tick them off as done if you want!)

Have you

1) Checked for crap / loose objects in the pre-chambers?

2) Checked for play in the rocker arm towers and dowel rods

3) Checked for camshaft bearing wear / end float measured?

4) Checked for timing chain tension / evidence of the damn thing twanging?

5) Checked for intermediate shaft play?

6) (If still fitted?) Checked for vacuum pump trouble?

I think I remember you've got redone (greazzer) injectors - and so I guess you've got that sorted - only the air in those overflow lines (because that linkage in the video touches)...

Did I say this already? Can't remember.

I like having an extra valve cover that I can cut the top off. Watch it running.

Have you

1) Checked for crap / loose objects in the pre-chambers? - Done

2) Checked for play in the rocker arm towers and dowel rods - Wiggled everything when the valve cover was off, all tight.

3) Checked for camshaft bearing wear / end float measured? - Didn't measure anything, ole mk1 eyeball didn't see any unusual wear, for whatever good that is.

4) Checked for timing chain tension / evidence of the damn thing twanging? - Checked timing stretch, did not check tension. Did find rub marks and score marks that lead me to believe that the timing chain let go at some point in the past.

5) Checked for intermediate shaft play? - Got some, bushing replaced, play was in spec, then less than 10k miles later there was significant play again.

6) (If still fitted?) Checked for vacuum pump trouble? - Removed due to tremendous knocking.

Thank you for the tips, responses added above. Yup, Greazzer reworked injectors. Not sure if the video shows it, but I do have a clear chunk of vinyl hose on the return line to view air through. Nada.

This is essentially academic now. Even if the pinging was solved, there are still other issues with the old motor. The new motor is paid for and on it's way to me, and has 150k less miles. Looking forward to getting it in!

I should get before and after videos.

If someone wants to buy the old motor off me and figure it out, they're more than welcome too. Heck we can even do consignment. Take the motor, fix it, sell it, split whatever's left after expenses.

I'm also considering Ebaying the bits and pieces and using the block to make a coffee table. V8 is so passe, who else has an inline 5 diesel coffee table?

Nope. Lol. I'm here for entrainment purposes only.

Coincidently, I just bought a car with 12k miles. It developed a tapping that sounded like a lifter. Kept going back and was told its normal. Got worse and worse. Prob put 2000 miles down. They just called and it's a rod bearing. New motor time, via warranty.

I didn't think it sounded like a rod. I guess so.

Lookin' good.

Take your time...if you can. Get it cleaned up and baseline it - compression, valves, fluids, etc.

Wish I were closer it would be a fun project.

Thank you!

Got a bit of prepping on the new motor done Saturday, mostly yanking off cruise control bits and motor mounts and such that won't be needed for my install. Sunday was spent hauling firewood and spending time with family, so not much progress on the swap.

I thought the engine sounded pretty good Sunday, for the most part it was just crawling around a hillside hauling wood and dragging logs and the log splitter around rough terrain in 4 way low. Today I drove it to work, the knock is back and it sounds like hell.

While the truck is still mobile, I'm not in a HUGE rush, but once I tear it down and yank the old motor out, it'll be pretty important that I get it running again ASAP. Going to do as much prep as possible ahead of time to make the actual swap as fast as possible.

I think this concludes this thread. Thank you everyone, I TRULY appreciate the help.

Not really...the thread's not done until the problem is solved i.e. it's running properly with the new engine.

I think we live through you. Because deep down inside we all want to do a swap. Congrats and good luck.

I feel like this is a good time for a knock knock joke.... James Bond marathon on showtime and I can't stop with the puns.

OK, I'm happy to follow up here. Had planned another thread for the actual swap or more likely just a footnote in my official swap thread, but I'm happy with whatever you guys want.

Hopefully a postmortem on the old motor as well.

Y'all are NUTS. By all means do a swap, when it's right it is AWESOME. The US market is seriously missing out by not having small diesel trucks commonly available. But please, for your own sanity's sake, use Mach4 or Dan Stokes as your role model, and not my hacked together mashup of junkyard stuff that would make Rube Goldberg sigh in frustration. I've driven Mach4's swap, it is a thing of beauty that MBZ themselves would be very proud to have their name on. Mine.............not so much.

Haha. Yes i may have a screw loose. Or a few.

But no thats a nice truck man. Im just an old toyota fan. I think ive had close to 7 now.

What i want now is the 80's cab and chassis setup with dual rear tires. An aftermarket company made that cab that kind of made it a big extra cab. With the right length chassis i can do an 8' flatbed with a dump. 4x4 swap and a 617 turbo. Ultimate ranch truck. I love climbing hills with the duals. Not good for a daily. But these are all dreams. Im young and have to focus on work for a bit. Just learning (from everyone) and planning. I feel like i finally know what i want and can put more effort in as I plan on keeping it.

And update wherever you want. Im subscribed.

Anyone know of a machine shop that will match-balance flywheels? Preferably in the Salem-Silverton Oregon area, though at this point I'm willing to ship if needed.

The four shops I've talked to all have the balancing machine, but won't match balance to another flywheel. "Bring in the crank, bring in the crank, bring in the crank." Well heck with that, not pulling apart the entire motor just because they can't be bothered to bolt two flywheels together 180deg apart and balance the assembly.
