Does it seem like a crazy idea? Buying another w210

Thinking of picking up an additional W210 to drive for a few months. I haven't bought mine back yet from a friend of mine who's selling it back to me (I know it's in my signature but not getting it for a few more months until he gets a new car, but its definite Ill have it by september).

I found two W210s on craigslist for under 4K that look rather beat and could make good parts cars for my W210. One is a '98, and the other is a '97.

What parts would be valuable for my '99 from a NA '97 diesel and a '98 Turbo? I know both share the same 722.6 as my '99 since the '97 was the first year for the 722.6 and the '98 is the same car as the '99.

I'm trying to make this worth the expense as much as possible and see what parts I could use for my '99 from either of them that would make it worth the expense and if I could make the money back parting them out. I know how much a w210 engine goes for used, so that's definitely something I'd sell as well

Here's both I'm considering looking at
1997 MERCEDES BENZ E300 turbo diesel (1997)
Mercedes e300 1998 (1998)

What parts would be worth keeping for the '99 incase anything went wrong? I'd definitely save the trans from either one of them as my '99 has given me problems in the past and I don't bank on it lasting past 200K (it's at 160K right now)

jake

How nice is nice?. I'm not looking for anything nice that I'd feel bad using as a parts car. The cars I'm looking at look like crap cosmetically.

I remember reading that the NA om606 had more can lift and duration than the turbo so you might want to save the NA cams for your 99.

I misunderstood your post. Man 3 - 4 k is a lot for a parts car. And you'll only be getting used parts. You can buy pretty much any new part you will need minus the engine and tranny for that. Are you needing body panels or what? Just thinking ahead so you can drive the car forever?

My car is definitely not a parts car. Uploading the pics didn't do so hot from my iphone. Its nice with $12000 worth of maintenance records in last 5 years. heated leather seats. white with grey interior, solid daily driver with only a few issues to sort out -- time for a little suspension.

There is this dealer in nashville always posting w210 diesels they get at auction with salvage titles often for 2500 or 3500. They stay on there a long time so 2000 or 1500 cash might fetch a decent car. Dealers like to flip inventory. Here is one right here: 1997 MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS 4DR E300D DIESEL SEDAN
I've seen three others like that in the past 6 months at the same dealer.

I'm selling my nice white car because I've just recently gotten my first 1998 w210 back from my friend as it is having tranny issue and is sort of a beater. But I got a nice matching 1996 gas parts car with a blown engine for 500 with leather seats so I can fix it up. The tranny issue maybe simple maybe not. He's done with it and got a new car. I hope i can put a 6 speed in it or at least a manual.

Yeah it is quite a bit. I'm not looking to spend anything more than 3K on a car that I'd use for parts and could drive for awhile. I wouldn't be parting it out right away, but driving it as well. I'd most likely take everything from the car, engine, trans, rear, body panels, and sell whatever is left and keep the rest for my 1999.

Swapping a manual in your 1998 E300 would be easiest if you put in a 6-speed since it would be recognized by the computers without issue and was used in the SLKs. Just a matter of changing the flywheel and switching over a few things.
