injector heat shields
Why do they list about 3 different heat shields for the injectors 6170170360 and 6170170060 are two of them. They say they vary at the base of them from 7.5mm to 10mm. Which is the correct one for 617 motor? Or does it vary with what type injector you have in?

I think it refers to the opening. The big ones are good for use on old injectors that are dirty or eroded on the nozzle face and won't seal well with a small hole.
I really don't think it matters which one you use.

Added: I thought the smaller holed ones were 5mm but I have not measured them.
When I first got My 84 300D (617.952) in 2007 they were selling the Heat shields with the 5mm holes in the middle and that is also what was in My Engine and in fact is also the ones on My Volvo Diesel. After that time some sellers sold the large holed ones and other sold the 5mm holed ones for the 617.952. Now it seams it is the large holed ones that are the ones most often sold for the 617.952s. On all of them the outside diameters of the Heat Shields are the same. On the newer than 1985 Engines at some point down the line there is a change and the Injectors got smaller in diameter and they use different Heat Shields. As manys1930 said if you use the 5mm holed ones over time the exposed area of the Nozzle erodes a little. To avoid the eroded area the larger holed Heat Shields seat on an area of the Nozzle that was not previously exposed to combustion it is a new nice flat seal. I prefer the 5mm holed ones and to make sure I get those the last time I ordered I bought Heat Shields for a 1982 VW Rabbit Diesel and use those on My Mercedes and also the Volvo Diesel I have.

Look up a 87 300D. they use part# 601-017-00-60 $1.25 and the hole is 7.5mm.
84 300D part# 617-017-03-60 $1.50 ea. 10mm hole. from MBZ on this site, $7.25 ea. I use the 7.5mm one and works just fine. Think Roy said either one will work ok. Charlie
