Does anyone rebuild their bosch 617 starter?

I have about twenty new brushes left over from my rebuild.

I plan to rebuild mine when needed. How much do you want for a couple of sets? Or at least one set?

Shipping/mailing to 70818.

There is a thread around here somewhere detailing how to rebuild them.

I take mine to our local rebuilder (Coastal Rebuilders here in Wilmington). They have ALL the equipment to do the job properly and give a "forever" warranty with NO hassles. How many of you have a growler to check the armature? Yes, that's a real tool and I don't have one - they do.

That said, I did many of them when I worked at the Buick dealer - used to be common practice. We essentially took a chance that the armature was OK and would redo the work if it wasn't. Usually a good cleaning, a set of brushes, a solenoid, and a new Bendix (starter drive) would get the job done but there's more to it than that. You can do the stator windings with an ohmeter but still, there's more. There are only so many hours in my day and sometimes it's best to pass on certain jobs and let the pros take over.

Dan - you're showing your age!

A growler - I didn't think anyone was still alive that knew what a growler is! I have two! Both are 'Allens'. They are sitting between the Sun Scope 800 & the Sun Sleuth II. And yes, I can (and do) use them. Cheers!

I haven't used one in maybe 40 years but in the dim, dark past .......

Cool that someone has one (or two) and uses it.

I thought a growler was the device used in ships to speak from post to post and deck to deck. At least that's what John Wayne used to use.

They wear out so infrequently that I have at least four around from junked engines. Can't sell them since nobody needs one and they are a ton to ship. A good used on from somewhere near you would be a good option. I'd sell any of mine for $25....too bad you're not nearby.

Those suckers ARE weighty! Mine was a PITA to install just because it was such a bugger to hold up in place. Still, it works fine.

Gather around children and Grandpa Dan will give you a lesson. If I owned a growler I'd include a pic.

A growler is an electrical device used to check continuity of an armature. It'll work on either a generator or a starter motor (no clue on an alternator). You place the bars in the middle in a metal "V" in the base of the unit and place the thin metal strip that's attached to the device with a wire on the commutator. You then slowly rotate the armature so each segment gets tested. It's been a LONG time since I've used one but IIRC it growls unless it encounters an open circuit somewhere and it'll get quiet (might be the other way around). If you look at an armature you'll see that there are a bunch of internal wires and it would be pretty tough to check them all with an ohmmeter - almost impossible. A segment might look OK and have all but one of it's wires functioning correctly and that's enough to keep the starter from working correctly.

Hope that explains it. Maybe Charlie Foxtrot can post a pic of one of his.

Dan
