Be sure to check out the drive shaft u-joints - there are recent threads about sticking u-joints, banging them with a hammer, etc. Also the center support bearing and its carriercan cause vibration - I'm having vibration issues (with an automatic) and am pretty sure the problem is in that area. Also going to replace motor mounts and the tranny mount just to make sure all that is nice 'n fresh - also easy and doesn't cost much.

OK, looks like the deal should go down this Saturday. I'll pick up the parts and take some pictures. I just hope the iron box and bell housing don't weight too much. I'm going to try and transport in an SUV.

Thanks guys,

Packman

You should be fine transporting the tranny in your suv. the old 4 speed transmissions weigh less than 100 LBS ( I put mine in without a jack). Keep us updated.

I picked up my Manilla Beige 240D yesterday from the shop and drove it around again.

I think that the vibration is coming from the clutch. I don't know about bearing noise, it's hard to hear anything above the sounds of the OM616 .

However, the "wriiiir" "Wriiiiiir!" noise and vibration from the clutch as it gets to 3000+ RPM is pretty apparent.

So, for me (a novice mechanic), I think that the clutch needs replacing as something is out of balance, but I am unconvinced it is input shaft bearing noise. Even so, I have committed to buying the iron box tranny and will do so.

Sincerely,

Packman.

P.S. I checked my motor mounts very carefully, with engine running. They are just fine. No mushiness, no collapse, operating properly.

Sounds like time to pull the tranny and have a look.

JB3,

Are the shifters specific iron box vs. aluminum?

I am in the process of swapping out my 716.210 aluminum trans (bad synchros) for the 716.005 slope back iron box and the iron box shifter is in bad shape.

I admit, it's hard to figure out what's going on with the video. What I can tell you is that I don't think it is the alternator. When I rev the engine with the hood up and my face in the engine bay, I'm not noticing anything odd coming from the engine, nor from the alternator, etc. However, when I am in the car, with the windows up, the blower off, I notice the vibration and the noise ONLY when the car is in gear, and around 3500-4500 RPM, at which point I feel vibration in the accelerator pedal and a "Vvvv Vvvv Vvvv Vvvvup" sound, which you can hear if you turn your speakers or headphones up.

Thanks for your input,

Packman

I am nuts too...as I can't hear anything

Besides being louder aka a 240D...it sounds the same as my 300d....only thing I find odd is the tach...I wonder "how" that mod was done...of course I didn't read this all...so maybe there is a turbo motor fitted? but sounds 4 cylinder...

Has one ever replaced the 9 bushings in the shifter and associated rods? Transmission and motor mounts? lemforder or phoenix only...

I personal don't think these manual trans ever fail...I have probably over 250k on the original clutch on the euro..

A heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

Here's the latest:

* The deal with the person who was going to sell me the transmission fell through. He simply stopped answering my calls and texts.
* I decided that since the white 240D had a known-good tranny, I instructed the shop to put a new clutch in the beige 240D and then swap the trannys around.

Result: Beige 240D is now smooth, no vibration, no bearing noise. White 240D now has a little bearing noise, but runs just fine, no clutch problems.

Thanks again,

Packman

Aha.

The guy with the tranny just popped back up!

He said he wasn't answering my calls or texts because he had no news over the 3-4 days I was texting and calling (I just assumed he was either sick or decided not to sell it... in any event I assumed the deal was off). He is still offering to sell me the tranny, says it is now out of the car.

Hmmm.
