smokey om601

Hello all, new member first post! So I just bought a 1989 mercedes 308d with om601 engine.

The problem im having is grey/blue smoke at idle..it is worst about 5/10 seconds after you first start it in the morning but it will do it whenever you start the engine basically. .it lets out great big clouds of smoke but clears as soon as the revs are raised however it comes back if you let it idle awhile.

It recently had the injectors removed and tested, new seals and refitted and it didnt remedy the problem..I believe the garage then raised the idle/ fiddled with the fuel pump as it seems fast however it may have been fast before this..so first of all what do you think it is? And secondly does anyone know where I can get a pdf version of this engine please? Thirdly I know on some vehicles valve seals can be done without removing the head..is this engine one of them? (I suspect valve seals / fuel pump/valve timing..)

Any help greatfully appreciated

Assuming all glowplugs are actually working, check timing and then compression.

Also pics of your 308d.

Here she is! Im a welder by trade and she needs a fair bit of metalwork doing. Looking forward to getting stuck in to it! Yes glow plugs are fine, compression is fine too,ill try checking the timing today and report back..I think its idling fast..heard a friends om616 today and idle is much lower..

Blueish smoke is usually suspect of burning oil where as incomplete burning of diesel is normally white smoke as is burning of coolant. Does it have a lot of kilometers on it? This one isn't turbocharged is it? How about blow-by?

Skippy~ As for perception: Drive what you like and can afford. Those who don't like it can supply vacuum to one of your components. LOL

If you need parts, I have some!

Also it starts really well..hardly turns over at all before it fires..even when real cold.and it goes really well too doesnt seem down on power..also theres no smoke for the first 20ish seconds..then the tone of engine changes slightly and thats when the smoke appears..
