Turbocharger vibrations

Turbocharger Guru s,

I checked out the post on trubochargers, but could not find anything on the possible problem with the turbocharger on my 83 300cd. There is defintely a vibration sound around the tubrocharger area. The sound is like a piece of loose sheet metal vibrating. The vibration sound is at it worse when the engine is at idle. When the turbo is kicks in (2000 rpm +) the sound is not as bad. There also seems to be a slight lose of power. There is no noticeable excessive smoke (white or black) occuring during idle or acceleration.
I thought maybe a bad water pump, but the water temp. has been at normal.
Any ideas?

Broken air cleaner housing support bracket? Worn out rubber bushings between the air cleaner housing and the support bracket?

Hope this helps, and hope its this cheap & easy.

And when you replace the air cleaner housing mounts, replace all three. They're not expensive and when I replaced just one, it sat funny and squeaked.

Gee you mean there actually is an advantage to having a California emissions car? With our different air cleaner set up I've never heard of any of the mounts breaking. Of course there is the slight problem of the Calif. version filters costing twice as much.....

One other thought...could an exhaust hanger be broken?

I had a couple rubber/metal exhaust hangers break on my old Scout, and would get a LOUD vibration in a certain RPM range...it was annoying, but didn't cause any problems, so I just left it...

Just a thought...good luck!

I would have to concour with Ken300d and TXBill, just the other evening I heard the exact same sound coming from same area. I put my hand on the air cleaner housing and the sound quieted up. But, instead of the mounts or brackets being broken, one of the three 10mm nuts that hold the housing down to the bracket had either loosened or I had not tightened completely last time I was in there. Thightened her up and quiet she is again!

As far as exhaust hangers. On my 300D there are only 6 "mounting points": The Turbo, the 4 rubber hangers, and a bracket type thing bolted to the transmission on which the Down pipe sits on and is held in place by a U-bolt sticking through the bracket.

So the anwser to the broken exhaust hanger making that noise, no. The Downpipe will break before that bracket does, and if the rubber hangers brake or fall off, you'll see it.

Thanks to all.

Thanks to for all for your replies on the vibration problem. I removed the air cleaner and checked all possible bolts and nuts around the air cleaner bracket and turbo charger. Still have the vibration noise. I then snugged up all the nuts on the alternator, still no luck. I took the car for a drive and the more I drove, the more this vibration noise was sounding more like a gas engine muffler with a hole burned or rusted though it. This is my first diesel, so I'm assuming diesel mufflers with this type of hole would sound the same. I'll get under the car tonight and check that possiblity.

Hi TXBill. Don't ignore the air cleaner mounts on the 240D. On mine, the rubber bumper broke, which allows the air cleaner to rub on the upper radiator hose. I will be replacing the bumper and coolant hoses this weekend, as well as servicing the oil bath air cleaner.

Diesel dudes,

Finally got a chance to trace down that irritating virbration noise.
(Soccer dads have no time of their own). Turned out to be a cracked alternator mounting bracket. Plan to replace when there is time. Anyone every have this happen?
