standard 14" steely rims with hubcaps... likely stock 185/75R14 snow tires... it's sitting nicely because it's a new car with new rubber in it... that is how they are ALL supposed to sit...

I thought the service wagons had the option for the heavy duty rear sway bar and the increased ground clearance for rough roads. I also thought they had the uber rare 15" steel rims.... could be wrong though...

well I suspect springs are different at least. I know this guys has been shown a lot
but he mentions
"So, I installed heavy duty version coil springs. In the case of Mercedes you can still order them at the dealer. Mercedes sold these stronger coil springs for the W123's in countries with bad road conditions. When you install the stronger coil springs you actually need to install heavy duty shockers too. In my case I only installed the stronger shockers in the front. The rears are still original. But hey, they are still in good shape! "
...and thats like the only reference I can find... anybody know anything more?

I think it might be this guy: 123 324 36 04 Spring travel – 19.4, wire diameter – 16, unloaded spring length 371. But .. different shocks?

It's a staged photo shoot too, sometimes you can grab hold of bumpers and pull up to make the car sit a tad higher.

It almost looks a bit 4x4 but I guess that option wasn't until later.

Yeah, I love that pic too. The stance is awesome. I would like my 240D to sit higher as well. Close to that if possible. I'll be purchasing new springs soon, and will also be installing the Bilstein HDs and new rubber components.

There was an option for springs that provide greater ground clearance. It was available in certain markets, for example Africa.

If anyone remembers the website for that couple that took their kids halfway around the world in an adapted 300td, he had those springs installed.

I have looked into getting them but to do so requires you have a VIN from a car from a country where they were sold. I did manage (through the BW list) to find a guy in South Africa who provided me with a VIN for a sedan, but that did not work. I could never find a SA-market VIN for a wagon.

My local dealer is game for parts searches like this but Mercedes requires he provide a VIN for the out-of-market vehicle to do so. They only sell parts from other markets if they have proof they are for a car imported from same.

At least here in Canada, that is the issue. I have run into it a few times.

It'd be great to get the factory spec'd part numbers for the "rough road" suspensions.

I'm looking for new rear springs to compliment the increase in height in front I got from the 4spd swap.

I've read that new original replacement springs give a lift just from being new. I have stock 195/70/14 tires and the tops are even with the lip of the rear fender with no load at all in the car...

I like the look of the lifted w123. Combine it with larger tires;

Zacharias,

Do you still have that sedan part number for the springs?

My word. ARe those 14 inch bundts? and ... what make and size are the tires?
I kind of love it.

I found other mentions of the 3rd world country package elsewhere but nothing definitive... I would really really like to know more about that. Any Afrikaaners around who could help?

edit: here's another shot of a service wagon ... sure seems like there is something going on with the height:

hmmm...

apparently this is what I am doing now:

Found this quote in an aussie mb forum
"only with optional equipment SA 912. suspension bad roads, for police or vets
This included harder coils with different diameter, other shockabsorber different rubber size... mpack1.jpg, and 15 zoll wheels.
This cars were nearly 8 10 cm higher"

I see this in the vin decoder "912 springs for increased payload"

I also found:
481 Unterschutz undershields a
482 Federung fuer groessere Bodenfreiheit springs for higher ground
clearance a
483 Code 481 und 482 code 481 and 482 a
484 Code 480 und 481 code 480 and 481 a
486 Code 481 und 485 code 481 and 485 a

this link talks about
Suspension: For use came the bad-export suspension (+17 mm ground clearance compared to standard version), which was further increased by 18 mm, so that instead of 165 mm now 200 mm from the ground were present. Furthermore, stiffer springs and dampers have been fitted with additional limit stop. A strut brace in the engine compartment and reinforced suspension completed the rally suspension.
For the connection to the street "commercial" off-road tires ensured (Pirelli Corsa 165 VR 15) on 15-inch wheels... hmm

I am also finding 482 for w124.. interchangable?

Heres the thread the pic is from:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/wheels-tires/366854-whats-largest-tire-size-14-bundts.html

I forgot about the spring insulators. Three nubs are the thickest I think. Anyone have the part numbers for them?

Be great to consolidate all the part numbers for Springs, Insulators, Skid Plates, Tire sizes etc. in this thread!

EDIT: Oh yeah, compatible Limited Slip differentials too hehe

I never had a sedan part number, what I had was the VIN from a South African sedan. I had tried to find an Africa-delivery wagon VIN but no luck.

The parts manager at the local dealer was told by head office there was no such part for the SA sedan VIN I supplied.

I don't have the VIN anymore, this was 2-3 years back.
