Topic: "Diesel Discussion"

? For some reason, folks here are throwing in all kinds of NON-DIESEL POWERED vehicles in their replies. Unless I'm wrong, shertex and I may be the only two posting members on-thread, that ONLY are using DIESELS as our daily-drivers.

shertex may be rich, since he has 3 DDs for 2 drivers.

One diesel MB DAILY-DRIVER here, for 29-years!

Right now I have 2...one roadster for the nice days and the other is an rx8 for the ugly days. I am pretty happy with the car situation at the moment, though the rx8 gets horrific mileage. Pretty soon I will have 3 DDs as I finish up putting the engine in an explorer.

I got my diesels. But I don't consider them daily drivers. I don't know if anyone answered the question right

As long as everyone is having fun with it...

To put this into perspective. None of my cars are of the " I hope it doesn't blow up today" category. The worst one of the bunch is the Bronco mostly due to body rust. The motor will keep going but is using oil.

I " Life " parts, this is changing them when they are near the end useful life not waiting for a random failure. When I get a car the starter / alternator come off and are inspected / rebuilt. Water pumps are changed when they look too old, belts / hoses are changed are regular intervals. I even go so far as to change fuel pumps when they hit 100,000 miles.

I put a 88 Dodge mini van together for Mom and Dad back in 96. Bought for $ 250 with a bad motor and ~ 125,000 miles. Rebuilt another motor / trans, steering rack, all suspension joints, fuel pump, entire brake system on and on. Put ~ $ 1,200 in parts into the car, when complete I had in effect a 35,000 mile car for no $. ( that's ~ $ 375 and $ 1,800 in today's $ CPI Inflation Calculator )

It was stone reliable except for 2 fuel pumps along the way and losing fuel injectors near the end. Finally scrapped van because they didn't need it any longer and body systems were pretty worn out at that point. Mileage was pushing 275 K, it could have gone to 300 + with a little care.

My problem is I do that I end up selling it for more than I have in. Every time. Can't help it. Have had 26 cars at 30 years old.

Only way to keep one is to buy it new. I can never make money on it.

But I have hope for the next Benz. A diesel of course.
