I think two is the right number for me. Lately I've been trying to do three: the 84 (which is for sale), the 91, and the 98. When my son goes out of town for a month, the 99 will be added to the mix.

As they say, it's very much a first-world problem....

I personally can't stand not having at least two cars drivable at any given time. Then again, I don't own anything newer than 1985, so you never know what's going to go wrong with one.

I could do about three, with two fully drivable and one that's getting worked on.

If one is to do the older car ( not show car mind you ) thing, there must be at least one good car in the mix. It doesn't have to be new, just good enough that you can hop in and do 2,000 miles by just checking fluids and air pressure.

I usually keep 3 vehicles with plates though last year it moved to 4. I am the only driver in the household.

I keep a 80 Chevy pickup single wheel 1 ton for local tow and hauling ( had 6,750 LB of concrete walk way squares in it a few times ) . It stays on plates year round, might see 1,000 mi / year.

Winter is a 84 Bronco 2 , had it 17 years and it is getting pretty ragged at this point which lead to the next purchase.

99 Ford Ranger 4 wd. The good car. This is kept in reserve during the winter in case the Bronco goes down, it stayed in the garage all winter on new snow tires. It might come off this summer to put my 88 Ranger back on.

The summer rotation is the 97 SL320 ( another drive anywhere good car ) and last year I got a 97 C280 for Mom. The C280 winters at my house but stands ready for use, in summer it goes to Mom's for her use. In winter she uses a 91 Dodge Spirit I bought for her in 95 along with the 99 Small Blazer I put together for Dad.

Sometime I'll get the 72 Porsche 914 going again but it will be a tough call as what car to take off the rotation.

I have four with plates. At least one too many. I have three old benzos now and am feeling the need to thin the flock.

We are retired and have 4. Wife drives one most of time (E320). I usually drive the 300D, but like to use the 350SL in good weather. The GLK250 only gets used for long trips or if it is very hot (because it is only one with working a/c)

I'm assuming that the term daily driver defines a vehicle I could use in regular service without much concern.....

1. 2005 CDI. We bought this car with the intention of it being the primary out of town car. I tend not to use it on a daily basis, want to save the miles for trips.

2. 1995 E320 wagon. My lovely wife's car. This car replaced the 87 300TD she drove for 13 years. Going on our 11th year, this is the first choice driver when Linda does her errands.

3. 1989 Dodge-Cummins Power Ram. This is the dedicated workhorse of the fleet. Pulls the car trailer and the 27' Airstream. Use it on a daily basis? Yah, sure. But why? Spends most of it's time in the shop hibernating, but when I need it, it's ready to go interstate.

4. 1999 BMW Z3. Project car, needed a lot of work when I got it. It's finally in shape for daily use, and has a prime garage spot in the attached garage. I love to drive it to work, and my wife is partial to it for running errands. I can see the use factor on this one rising as we sort it out.

5. 1994 E320 Cabriolet. Nice car I've owned for 5 years. Bought it right, it needed top hydraulics, thought I'd use it as a daily driver, but....... I do use the car a rotational daily driver, but only on days when I can use the top..

There are still two more that *could* be used as daily drivers... A 1968 MGB with 37K miles and all original, that belongs to my wife and a 1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner convertible that my Uncle bought new, it has 50K original miles... The 560SEL could also be pressed into daily or interstate service, but..... ooh that gas bill. So she sits in the shop unless we have a fancy event to go to..... Then, it's hard to arrive in anything cooler than a nice black W126 long wheelbase ride.

I've been getting by with only (1) car for almost 40 years. I don't see that changing, since I can only drive (1) at a time, and I only need (1) car. So, the question is; why would (1) person need more than (1) car? Provided that car is legally and operationally usable?!

Is what I interpreted to be The Brian Carlton Doctrine. When any number of cars aren't 100%, completely operational AND dependable - then one needs several, in order to expect something to start when one needs to have that paramount of importance - the totally reliable daily-driver for transportation.

1 "daily driver." A new pos gas car every 5 years. $200 month, manual everything, 40 mpg. At the end of 5 years its paid off and deemed unreliable. Anywhere from 200k-600k miles....

And soon, that will be the only car...
