May Ohio Mile Meet & Mutt

Had a great outing at the Ohio Mile for me and Mutt - and my HS buddy Larry.

Anyhow, we got down the track and are now track record holders. For some reason young Mutt isn't making much boost (the absolute most I saw was 10 PSI for just a second) so I'll get with the turbo guy and see where we're going off the rails. As it is, our F/DT track record now stands at 97.9965.

Here's some pics. Larry was taking the shots using my camera and he thought he had some vids that turned out to be pics. Next time we'll do some test vids for operator familiarity.

Larry and Mutt in the pits.

Mutt, me, and Victor Allen (a friend from Fancy Gap, VA) in the staging lanes.

Me and Victor discussing the state of the world. Weird pic of me!

Notice the stylish flash of the front bumper. Mutt spent a LOT of time with his hood up - seemed like everyone wanted to see what was under there.

Starting line pic at launch. Larry thought he had a video rolling but it was just a pic. I enhanced this as much as my photo editing software will allow but it's not the best. Still, it proves that we went down the track!

I can't tell you how great it was to see all the LSR family. I think Larry was surprised to see how laid back the whole deal is and how we are sort of a big, dysfunctional family. He's an old drag racer and he agrees that this is a different world.

On the way home I stopped briefly at Wheels Through Time in Maggie Valley, NC. DO IT!!!!! Dale Walksler, the head guy there and the star of "What's In The Garage" on Velocity, was starting and messing with some of the antique bikes. I have to mention that the Crocker was out on the grass in front of the shop - if that doesn't make your gearhead heart go pitty-pat, call the undertaker. He came over and looked at Mutt and said nice things. Having Dale say "Nice installation! Did you do it?" was a great feeling.

Now to sort out the turbo!

Dan

Oh Max!!!

LSR is Land Speed Racing. Some are familiar with the concept from TV reports of Bonneville - though I'm not sure they are familiar with the sport itself. We are only concerned with the maximum speed attained. How quickly you can cover a set distance is drag racing - we are unconcerned with time in LSR. How far you can go in a given timeframe or how quickly you can attain a set distance (like say, 500 miles) is some sort of roundy-roundy racing. So my 97.9965 is MPH. LSR grew out of early attempts to reach the fastest speed on Earth, which auto manufacturers used as a sales technique.

I think I discussed the F/DT thing in my build thread.

"F" is the engine displacement class - in my case, "F" is 123.00 to 183.99 CID/2.016 to 3.014 l. The OM617 at 2.998l is about perfect for the class. Another example - Jetmugg runs a VW Diesel powered Dodge Rampage in the "G" engine class (beautiful truck, BTW) so his engine is a tad under 2l.

The D/T is "Diesel Truck". There are no specific car Diesel classes and the Diesel truck classes were made for trucks like his and mine. There are certain limits and rules though few pertain to the engine as long as we stick to the displacement limits. As far as the body, we're allowed a front air dam but NO rear spoiler or wing. Stuff like that. Under the hood we're allowed pretty much anything - my bigger turbo and injectors are just fine. We must run Diesel fuel and no propane or nitrous is allowed.

Hope that helps

Dan

Congratulations on a great first outing! You went a little less than the same engine would do in a 123 benz, which is to be expected given the bricklike truck shape. With only 10 psi boost there is a lot more to be had, I'd say.

Thanks Dan, sounds like loads of fun. Glad to hear of your progress, I'm sure you'll be able to well exceed 100 mph once you get it all sorted. In my '85 123 wagon with NA engine and five speed manual transmission, I was able to reach an indicated 105 mph, if I recall correctly.

Your truck looks great, Dan! Congratulations on the F/DT record. You put together a great package, and I'm sure that there's a lot more potential in the whole deal.

Just one point of clarification - my current engine is H class. (just under 1.5L). We ran 123.xxx mph at Ohio, and 135.003 mph at Bonneville. Just for reference sake, that was on the high side of 30 psi boost. When re ran it on the dyno, it made 167 peak HP.

We are working on a Mercedes OM604 engine to run in the G (2 liter class), but it's not ready yet. We won't be running G/DT until 2016.

There's no doubt that your OM617 engine has a lot more power potential. I cannot speak highly enough about Dieselmeken AB (Goran Lindgren) as an injection pump builder/rebuilder. There may be others who are equal to him, but there are none better. The effect of his magic in the injection pump makes BIG POWER possible.

Again - congratulations on your record at Ohio, and on putting together a very nice LSR diesel truck. There aren't too many of us out there. Looking forward to seeing you in June.

Steve.

Steve -
Any contact info on the pump guy? I need to get prices and that sort of thing though I may need to wait for the wallet to recover. Your motor is smaller than I thought! You're getting a lot out of it.

...Ooops, I forgot his Youtube channel. There's a lot of good information and good entertainment on this channel. It's definitely subscription worthy.

Where did you get a 604 in the states? That thing should be good for something like 400hp with enough fuel.

Is the rotary pump tricky to modify?

The 604 did not come from the USA. It's also not set up with a rotary pump any more. Goran has built a "Super Stroker Pump" for the OM604 project (sleeved & de-stroked to get under 2L). You are right, we are looking to be on the high side of 400HP with that engine.

Not to thread-jack too much, but here's a video of Goran showing the initial testing of my OM604 pump, at up to 7,000 rpm....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJZBffz9S2w

Additional testing and tuning was performed after this initial video.

Thanks Steve!

I'll have to stick to the website as I don't DO social media (Facebook, etc.). Too old and set in my ways. You're right - his English is excellent - and much better than my Swedish.

Dan, are they doing any more events at Maxton? I just looked at the ECTA site and the only events are listed in Ohio. Also, all the records seem to end in 2011. Surely someone has gone faster since then...

AFAIK, Maxton is no more. There will be no more "new" ECTA records set at Maxton.

Wilmington, Ohio is the only venue for the ECTA, and it's a great one.

That's a shame. It's right here in the back yard, especially for Dan!
