Sun roof Questions

I removed the sunroof on my 84SD with the intention of cleaning & lubing the tracks and adjusting. There are metal tabs on each corner (4 total on the roof) and it looks like there should be some type of padding. Mine are MIA. What is supposed to be there? Does it matter? I think it maters because the rear corners have to be pushed up to close.

Are there alternatives that can be easily fabricated - at least for temporary use?
What tricks are there for getting proper roof alignment? FSM says to remove 2 "locking bolts" one per side. I did and the roof wouldn't come off so I removed the 3 bolts (actually 2 bolts and a nut)/ side that connects the bracket to the roof. I haven't been able to have the roof close squarely without helping it by hand.

Ahhhh, the learning curve for each new task.

Either felt pads or plastic sliders are probably missing, only available from MB.

You can either call Tom Hanson at the MB Classic Center (1 949-598-4842) or use the EPC (electronic parts catalog) to look up the part numbers and then Google them to find out who sells them (usually an MB dealer, there are a few with on-line services).

Official MB Sun Roof Lube

Gleitpaste

A "Tub" will do about 150 cars, and is horrendously expensive.
(Made for use in dealerships)

Almost all vendors will sell you a small amount needed for personal use.
(Our sponsor, P.P. , will set you up with enough for a couple of "Roofs" for
a reasonable price.)

[Thanks to GSXR for the Photo]

Sadly the contact info in the picture for the source is now un-obtainium.

Link to the pictures of sunroof "Sliders" that go on your Neked metal tabs:

The guy on the west coast that we don't mention here sells sunroof grease in small quantities. He may also have other sunroof parts.

I have a film can with the correct grease. Was also wondering whether Sly Glyde would work.

White lithium grease works just as good people...

The issue with sunroofs not working besides the pads missing is all the old gummy grease in the motor, cable tube and cable.

There is no point in adding more grease with out cleaning out all the old which is not easy or fun...

So, any tricks for getting it lined up correctly? I have since read that I took out too many bolts Apparently the roof will come out with only removing toe 2 horizontal"locking" bolts. I didn't see how and am past that point now.

Oh boy! That is something I haven't attempted to play with yet, I may encounter that later on. I have a friend down the street who just got a 300D where the wind deflector popped off the center hold down and the PO opted to mess with the screws.

There are youtube vids for adjusting the height. Mine isn't pulling up squarely. I'm going to remove it in case I have something obviously misaligned. Track lubing is supposed to be annual maintenance. Service manual says nothing about cleaning the cable & other details posted above.

I'll have to explore while the headliner is out. This was a recently purchased car with stopped up sun roof drains. It looked like a water balloon hanging from the ceiling after a hard rain & I ended up removing the head liner.

Crap!! The rear felt pieces are $33 each. The fronts are $22 each. That comes to $100 for a nickle worth of material.

What alternative has anyone come up with?

True it doesn't but I don't think the FSM thought these cars would be on the road some 40 years later. The same thing happens to the starters/alternators/sunroof motors/window motors. I have the old sunroof motor from the euro downstairs(manual conversion in progress ) I can open up and show what the grease turns into

I have to re read to be certain but I believe the felt pads aren't suppose to be grease but most are all sticky now.

Sure you have no holes in the pan? My euro had no leaks but when I took it down I noticed a lot of rust starting. I was surprise the pan wasn't better prepped/painted at the factory. I don't want to know the condition of the 78...there was moss growing in the seals when I got it.

Um the source at the m has two for 30. They use these pads on a few models of cars. I got all mine from the junkyard.
