The lip seal does not function in that manner... there is no mechanism for retracting the pad.... they just sit next to the rotor.. or they push on it....

Lots of references look very nice....and are not dealing with first hand physics.. they have copied other nice looking websites... or books.....
Try this.... go out and take a feeler gauge and put it into that " air gap " and tell us how big it is ......
