Had them both too and owned them at the same time.

Loved the 116 double chrome bumpers front and rear that wrap around. Nothing says classic Benz like them.

I had a near perfect fire engine red 79 300SD with 82,000 miles and regret letting it go.
There was a tiny roof leak in the A pillar , the AC was ice cold and perfect, the sunroof it had and was like new.

I let it go to get a black on black 1 owner 93 300E 3.2 l & a manual seat in the 116 vs 6 way adjustable 126 drivers seat. To me that was the kicker.

Still I wish I had it back.

I think Mercedes set a high bar for the s class with this body style. My 79 300sd feels more like a luxury car compared to the recently acquired 83 TD. It has a much more vintage look than the 126 but with equally dated amenities. The evil servo is easy to correct but aesthetics of the CC are pretty bad.

When I got my 79 300SD several years ago, one of the senior members here told me; " Driving an older 300SD on the highway was like dancing with a fat lady."

If you own one you know exactly how true this is.

On the highway it just glides. Impressive passing power considering what it is.
In the corners there is massive body roll but tons of grip. It's awesome. Totally different than my 190E Sportline but just as great of a car, besides the fact that I wish that the seats were better.
