loss of power, hard shake, and knock

On my way home from work tonight my wagon lost some power and began making a loud knocking noise. Was on the freeway cruising at about 75 mph when it happened. The car slowed to about 60 mph almost instantly.

I pulled into a parking lot and checked under the hood. Lots of shaking and the knock was much more audible at idle. Looked to be burnt oil smoke coming out of the air filter as well.

Managed to get home.

Any ideas and would it be advisable to drive it 15 miles to the shop i use? I'm not equipped time, tools or knowledge wise to troubleshoot an ip or injector issue. Let alone something like a piston or bearing.

Well I hope you don't also have a rod knock! Maybe time to remove the lower oil pan and look for metal? Non-ferrous metal (not attracted by a magnet) is probably babbit material from a bearing.

Sorry to hear this. Next you should do a leak down test. Maybe it's a broken valve and you can get away with just head work.

Update: My mechanic is recommending replacing or rebuilding the engine. These engines are obviously difficult to source, and then who knows what you're getting. I don't see the $8,000 metric motor rebuild option as feasible given my bank account balance and value of the car.

I'm at my wit's end on this one. Car is too nice to scrap or part.

How about salvage yards reasonably close to you ... or buy a parts car with bad body but good engine.. many many have to resort to that method to keep these cars going without being rich....

Not a lot of wagons period compared to 123 sedans.....
that special pump head on the wagon ...and another model ..... does complicate things....

Would putting my wagon head, assuming it's undamaged, on a regular block be advisable or trouble?

Off hand.... I would say that is doable....
depending on the engine you find....
but would be a big job....
and would take some research.....

Does your wagon still have the leveling system in the back ?
