joegolden - No, smooth as silk. You would not think you were going 118 mph. Great sound insulation in the car with the dual pane glass and such.

cool! What are the RPM's at say 85mph? That is what I run all the time to Atlanta and back. What kinda MPG do you get at that speed? 85 that is?

Mostly on trips I run around 80 mph until I find a rabbit and then follow him. Up to about a steady 100 mph. My wife doesn't much like going over 100-105 mph. At those speeds my MPG drops to about 24 from a normal 27-28. I will check the rpms for you tomorrow but I know 65 mph is 2500 rpms so 85 should be around 3275.

I was just curious to compare your new one to my old 300d I used to have. My old 84' 300d would turn about 3500rpms at 80-85.

Funny my 260e gas ran higher rpm at 80-85. It ran about 3750rpm at those speeds.

Have you had any of the engine problems out of yours? I have heard some terrible tales about that motor.

I had to re-seal the turbo is all except regular maintenance. I have a little blowby now but I don't think it is excessive yet. Uses a quart about 2500-3000 miles.

BTW- I have made "adjustments" to the EGR and blowby pipe.

The fasteset I have ever gotten my NA 300D 85' was 103mpg (so says the speedometer). This was on a small down-grade on I-76 at about 2am. It was really smoking-literally: as the unusually enormous plumes of soot and ash etc. comming from my car's exhaust would certainly leave me an ample cover (smoke-screen) from any patrol cars that were behind me! It was especially noticible with the headlights from the cars behind me.

When I got home I looked in my owner's manual, and it says that the mechanical limit for the car in top gear (auto) should be 93mph. This really surprised me. I guess that either the speedo if off, or the car was dooing TOO well for an 85' non-turbo with 210K on the clock!

Anyway, I'm not worried, I run full synthetic and WAY over-maintain my car, but I don't plan on ever going that fast in my 300D again; that's why I bought a BMW!

HAHAA smoke screen, I like that! Ever had someone pull up beside you and hold their nose while looking over at you. My friend did had that happen to him. As soon as they left the light he floored his 300 td again and pulled in front of the guy. His car took a big dump all over this guy with his sunrrof open and everything.

Don't know if it had more than a couple of mph more left in it. It took a while to get there. There was a cop shooting pictures over the top of the hill just as I was getting to do the run.

Actual land speed may vary

Borrow a GPS from someone to get a true(r) reading. My speedo was off by 3.5 mph at 70, so at 110 it must be off by at least 5. My 300sd will do 110, but there is no point in testing the tensile strength of the timing chain in a remote area.

I've got a Garmin GPS for flying, but I can't find it! We're moving this weekend. I hope it's packed in some box.

I've had my 1987 300D up to an indicated 120mph a couple of times. It was not topped out yet but I didn't want to risk pushing further with an old-technology radar detector. The RPM limit on this car would put the theoretical top end around 125-130mph.
