The fastest I've gone in a Merc diesel was recently in my 84 300TD- a posted 105 mph with seemingly a bit to go. My 81 SD would not go as fast- is there a difference in the final drive ratio between the TD and SD I wonder? The (84)TD seems to have fewer rpms showing on the tach across the range compared to the (81)SD. Current TD by far the healthiest 5-cyl. turbo I've driven. Might have something to do with the previous owner (of 17 years) who never had it over about 50 mph. We're making up for lost speed now, though....

Well I got my 190D 2.2 up to 94 Mph w/ two people, a guitar, a paintball gun, and a bb gun in the car. It could have gone faster but would have taken a while to get there. And with my exhaust system in the condition it's in, I didn't want it to fall off! I think I made it worse though.

Though one thing concerned me, even cruising at 70 the engine temperature was right at the 100C mark. The ambient temperature was reading 33-34C. So I don't know if something isn't working its best or what? Let me know what you all think.

100C sounds a little high. But, as long as it doesn't ever get over 100-105C, I wouldn't bother with it unless you're bored and have money to spend. If/when it does get over ~105C, you'll need to diagnose the problem further. I'd start by cleaning out the bugs from the radiator & A/C condensor fins, and replacing the coolant (with a good flush) if not done in the last 3 years. Then thermostat, temp gauge sender, fan clutch test, and radiator (in that order).

HTH,

Radiator is new, coolant is new. I have been wondering about the fan clutch and the thermostat for a little while. It has been running hotter than I like lately. But it doesn't get above 100 when I'm driving or sitting, so I'm not going to worry about it. I am kinda tight on money right now as it is, so if it doesn't need fixed, I'll leave it alone.

Hello there,

Those are way cool (great) ground effects air dams on your car, where did you find them and the wing as well.

Diesel super speed!!

In 1976 MBZ took the 300SD engine and turboed it , probably intercooled it too. They pumped the 5 cylinder up to 190HP and put the engine in the C111 super car, they broke 13 World Class Diesel records.

One of the records was on the Nardi Track in Italy where they averaged 156.9MPH for 5000 miles (8050 kilometers). Needless to say, we've all got a great car in the 123 Series that probably has a lot more potential than we are currently getting.

Next week, we're heliarcing the final fittings for our intercooled 300DT. Will keep the site posted.

See page 442 in the Mercedes book.

Ben

Here we go....
Removed my solid engine fan and added an electric one.
removed the oil-bath air cleaner and fabbed up a k&n cone
style pipe / filter intake.
Terrorized the freeway at night.
Drumroll please..........
1976 240D 4-spd (115.117) 340k mi
102 mph according to the tell-tale gps.
I felt bad for everyone else who happened uppon the smoke screen that filled the interstate behind me however.
Wow, she runs better than ever and is all cleaned out.
Talk about instant de-carboning. he he....

I have a 80 TD with I think a 81 turbo engine. I have only had the car about a month so the highest I have had it is about 75. Without a tach I have no idea where she would top out and am not comfy pushing it (yet).

With all the diesel sounds at 75, do you guys use ear plugs at 110+?

Ear plugs? ROTFL! You guys and your 123's, I don't understand that love affair. In my 124's (1987 300D) the only difference between 50mph and 125mph is all the little needles on the gauges point to the right instead of straight up. No more noise other than a wee bit of wind noise, which I suppose is to be expected. If you can find a W124 diesel to test drive I highly recommend it... prices have plummeted and they are a huge step forward in refinement, while not being any harder to work on (actually, a lot easier IMO).

Regards,
