722.4 transmission leak

I've been chasing a leak for a while now 124 2.5 TD and finally located it on the passenger side behind the dip tube. The leak originates from the front most 2 inch diameter plate held in by a snap ring. This should be the B1 brake. I'm not certain but i think it could be wiggled out somehow but given the clearances would not be fun while in the car. Can anyone tell me if its possible to remove this while in the car to reseal it or will something come flying out. Or would it be best to slather on lots of RJV from the outside to stop this leak and deal with a proper fix whenever the transmission is out of the car?

On another note I did find a 95 diesel in a wrecking yard which was mis labeled so lots of parts still on the car including a 722.6 transmission I believe. Would that transmission drop directly into my car since the 722.4's don't last forever.

Thanks in advance.

A 95 E300D is a 124 chassis, like your car is. To the best of my knowledge the 124s never got a 722.6. The 722.6 is an electronically controlled transmission that made its debut in the W210, which ran from 1996 to 2003. I think it was not until the 1997 210 that the 722.6 was introduced. The 722.6 carried over into the W211 as well.

Now that 95 E300D has the OM606.910 n/a engine. The 96-97 210 got the OM606.912, very similar except with electronic accelerator. The 98-99 210 got the OM606.962 with the turbo.

I give it a high probability that the 95 E300D in the yard will have a vacuum controlled 722.4 in it and will most likely be compatible with your car.

Thanks Jaybob when I have more free time I'll be under the junk yard car and have a look at the numbers. Since the B1 is on the front side of the trany I was thinking of also pulling the motor mounts to drop everything more if needed. When I get parts I'll let you know what had to be done.

Ok after having to wait almost 2 weeks for the o ring from Germany I managed to get it installed. It can be done from below with just removing the belly pans. I used a 13" carpenters clamp, (a mentioned by another member) with a 7/8 inch socket which fits into the depression of the b1 retaining cover other end of the clamp on the opposite side of the transmission body. Compressing the cover reviles the wire clamp a small depression in the ring seat right at the bottom hardly visible allows a screwdriver to be inserted and the ring snaps off. Loosen the clamp to remove the b1 piston assembly the clamp has limited release length so it's a bit tricky. My o ring seal was stiff and cracked causing the leak 8 inch diameter over night not sure what that relates to in volume. Installation a bit trickier I ended up using a 36 in clamp due to limited travel of the smaller clamp and the length of the piston springs. You should allow 4 hours and if you suck out a litre and a half no transmission fluid on the floor.

A very useful link I made reference to is
