Gasoline damage

Considering a non turbo 617 that was run on gasoline. Catches but won't run. What damage does gasoline do to a 617?

Like a human run on alcohol. It depends on the % mix and duration.

Could have done anything on the scale form nothing to killed the injectors to melted pistons to killed your injection pump... No real way of knowing until you get into it. I would make the assumption that the engine is toast and make an offer accordingly from there.

I love my non tubos....If you could get it for parts price aka few hundred...I would snatch it....well evil servo makes me "not" love my 78 lol

Undo the hardlines(if the engine isn't seized) bleed out all the gas/diesel mix...and see what happens...

People cut WVO with gas...so you may get lucky...prepare for the worse though...

As moon161 said.

See if the Owner will let you pull a couple Injectors. Look at the Pintle that is supposed to be sticking out.
If it was run till it stopped I think you will find the Pintels burned.

You could also do a compression check.

Its a non turbo 80. I have a couple turbo 617s laying around. Any compatibility issues with turning it into a turbo car? Tranny? I don't have any extra trannys.

If it was me....If I was looking for a body to put one of my spare turbo engines in...I wouldn't look at the non turbo...

That will have the evil servo climate control(unless euro), that is the worse thing about the non turbo's..

I believe the trans won't work, someone else will chime in...

You can convert this car to euro, find a 4 speed trans bolt it to your turbo engine and then fine the 240D climate control for it. euro's are FUN!!!

Not predictable damage wise usually. As long as there are simular cars in local wrecking yards. Chances are you may still get it up and running cheap.. No absolute certainty but in most cases I would take a chance. The selling price should reflect the unknown.

Technically you can destroy an engine by running gas. The odds are just less certain with an older diesel like that.

Now some sellers are somewhat less than honest. So you have to kind of judge the selling individual. If you pull the fuel cap do you smell gas fumes? You should in my opinion unless he has drained the gas.

We purchased a '84 300SD and within a week or two my wife filled it up with gas. It died before she pulled out of gas station. My indy said we could tear the engine down and see if there was damage but suggested that we might just drive it. So he drained the gas (not sure what other kind of purge he did) and filled up with diesel. We never had another problem with it.

It really depends how long that motor ran on the gasoline. First and foremost, gas being a solvent means it won't lubricate any fuel system components, and it tends to burn the pintle's tip off the injector.

Make an offer assuming you have to put a junkyard engine in it.

Right; Tyler just posted a TD for sale with an engine destroyed by gasoline. So it does happen. Too bad too; it looked like a good TD.

no doubt it's that car. transmission from a non turbo is not the same as the one on turbo cars. Non wagon 617's will need the wagon head for the SLS. I'd think swapping out the engine with another non turbo and using the current head would make this car worth it for someone...

Not on that wagon....I thought he would do good if he got the asking for it...now that its on eHell I am like WOW good for him...

That wagon would make a nice project if it stayed under four figures....now its not worth it...there is another WVO wagon for sale on here that its only issue is bouncy temp gauge...it has the third row seat and head rests...with a more common color interior...user has done alot and had the wvo disconnect...he has also driven the car quite a bit...

I would go after that one before this one...as this ones con's is more trouble some..

Driving a 78 NA they are SLOWWWW and they have the evil ACC...two negatives...love my 78 to death but 77hp in a 2 ton car is horrible...

I also see bulimic seats and rust on the blue car as well as harder to find blue interior with issues......Once you start adding on repair cost to the purchase price your at a whole another price level that can afford you so much more..

Explain what "Catches" means. Does that just mean the starter turns over the engine? Try to be clear here when asking questions, and avoid slang, especially such "custom slang".
I would first insure you are getting fuel to the injectors. Crank it a while, then slowly crack a fitting at an injector and insure fuel comes out. Ideally, it would be a fine spurt, that indicates it is building high pressure, though might be hard to judge. If it doesn't reach 1600 psig, no fuel will flow into the engine. Might be as simple as air in the system. If so, crack each inj fitting and crank until you see fuel at each.
